I knew this day would come

This morning I started to go to my trusty old friend, matrix.itasoftware.com started by a Cambridge MA group in 1996 only to discover that the old platform is being really changed visually and maybe functionally. I had never warmed up to Google flights, which bought it in the early 2000s but I guess I’ll need to learn to love it as my trusty friend changes or disappears into retirement…

MIGRATION ALERT

Matrix is now migrating to a new interface, and this website may experience downtime during the process. Please bookmark newmatrix.itasoftware.com and/or oldmatrix.itasoftware.com to continue using Matrix without interruption.

For those of you who’ve made the change from the Beta version to itasoftware to matrix.itasoftware over the past 26 years(!) can you offer any help? I feel like I need a support group and I shouldn’t have waited so long to try to like Google Flights.

Wow!! You just reminded me of how computer dumb I am.

But I can handle google flights, its made for people like me. Has done a good job for me over the years. Not perfect, but gets the job done.

I love google flights, amazing tool. Never did use the ita site, so I can't compare.

I also never used the matrix site, but do use google flights. I just never find the price on google flights to be the actual price on the corresponding airline website.

I also liked the Matrix site.
However, I like SkyScanner, as you can see prices under the dates on its' calendar, when you bring up a month at a time.

Cann see a month at a time on Google flights too. Unless your destination is "Europe", then they dont offer the calendar option, just specific dates (which I dont like)

(Love google flights, never used the other)

I personally prefer Kayak for US travel plus international flights. That's usually just to find the flights... I go to the airline's website to book. I use Skyscanner for travel within Europe

I find the new Matrix interface better, actually. One new easier to use feature is that you can enter multiple origin or destination airports, e.g., PDX to FLR,FCO,PSA. Exact date search is the default, for date ranges click on the "Add Advanced Controls" button. You can also enter a start date and trip length and pull up a calendar.

Time bars are still there in the search results, but you need to click the "Time Bars" link at the top of the page.

One thing still broken with Matrix: When looking for Premium Economy, it doesn't seem to be able to find most mixed cabin itineraries. For the above PDX-FLR search, it gives me Iberia and Air Canada mixed cabins, but for everyone else (e.g., United) is shows 1st/business combos.

Oh, James E! I so have you beat on minimal computer skills. This is how I read the email:

Matrix? Wasn't that a movie?
itasoftware. Love child of cutlery and silverware?
Isn't a platform what you dive off of in a swilmming pool?
Isn't interface something you sew into a garment?
Migration...which species?

You think I'm kidding. NOT!

susie, I was thinking the movie too. I thought somehow people were entering the matrix to find flights. Maybe Keanu Reeves was the booking agent? I'm lost.

I really just love to explore the world. There really isn't a place I dont want to visit. For me its about getting to as many new places as I can; but i couch that with one or two places I want to revisit as well. So, one of my favorite searches is the One Way Non-Stop Search. I have a few weeks off. I want to see Prague and naturally I want to go to Budapest; but I want to see some place new too.

So, I search Prague to Europe, Non-Stop and I get a map with lots of options. I set the filters for under $150 cause I am cheap, and the duration of the flight to under 2 hours (it doesn't have a 1.5 hour setting but thats my limit). Because they are mostly discount airlines I know there are different options on different days of the week so I do have to play around with the dates a bit.

The options presented are: Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Paris, Zurich, Rome, Vienna, Warsaw, Kyiv.

Then I do a similar search from Budapest to Europe. The options I get are Warsaw, Prague, Paris, Zurich, Kyiv, Athens and Bucharest.

Then I look at what cities are in common between the Prague and the Budapest search. This trip can be US to Prague, to either Copenhagen or Zurich or Warsaw or Paris or Kyiv and then on to Budapest and then Home. The two commuter flights will run less than $250 and the flight time is less than 1.5 hours each leg. If this were a serious search, I would be off to Warsaw.

LOL Susie and James E. Thanks to everyone who replied. I will at least wean myself from old to new itasoftware but I will see if I like the visual distractions of Kayak and Google Flights too. I already book only with the airline after checking with itasoftware or where I happen to see a good fare.

We use Skyscanner to check on European flights to see a better selection of regional airlines vs legacy carriers. In the past ten years or so we’ve done more of these vacation hopping flights once we are in Europe but with Covid still a factor we are sticking to one country.

Again, thanks for the levity and encouraging me to get out of my old comfort zone.

I just hate it when a program I have learned to use productively comes out with updates. I've seldom been pleased with the "improvements."

This is true of other things too, not just software. Nothing is more disappointing than when a product is labelled "New and improved!" Usually it means they've added ingredients that I can't eat, or don't want to. Don't get me started on poultry "enhanced" with sugar and salt for our dining pleasure. Grrrrr.

James, hopefully you're not still playing The Oregon Trail Game from the 70's. :)
