Hi everyone,
My 7y/o son (very adaptable traveler) and I are arriving early Monday morning (June) in Paris from the US. My husband will be arriving a few hours later. 16 days later we leave from Rome to India.
Here is my rough itinerary. It seems to leave one day too many in Rome, and I'm wondering if I should spend that "extra" day in one of the other cities I'm visiting, or spend on a side trip off these same cities, or do another stop. Keep in mind that my son and I will be spending an extra 3 days in Paris in route from India back to the US later on in our trip.
Monday, arrive early morning in Paris (2.5 days)
Thursday morning take a flight to Vienna (2.5 days)
Sunday morning take a train to Salzburg (1.5+days)
Monday night take a night train to Venice (2 days)
Thursday Morning take a train to Florence (2 days)
Saturday take a train to Rome (3.5 days)
Wednesday take a flight to India
Later on the trip in the way back to the US son and I will spend 3 full days in Paris.
So what do you think?
Thank you for your advice in advance!
Honestly - it appears too many destinations and not enough time in any one of them...except maybe Paris. These days you have listed - are they really nights or are they true days? 2 nights in any one destination really only equals 1 full day.
If I had to add a day anywhere it would probably be Salzburg and hopefully you can take your 7 year old on something fun like the Berchestesgaden Salt Mine Tours and then the summer luge just behind the salt mines. Sometimes cities aren't too interesting for 7 year olds. There's also a very green park in Venice down to the tip in St. Elena. Lots of outdoor play area with swings and slides and real Venetian residents with lots of kids out playing. That might be fun for your 7 year old.
3.5 days for Rome too many? Not at all. Just fyi, my daughter and son-in-law took my then 6.5 year old grandson to Rome last December. One of my Xmas presents to them was a book, entitled something like, "Rome with Kids," which they found useful. Either from the book or from the web, they found a day tour specially designed for children, which was a big hit with the young one.
Hello ppbrazil. I think your amount of time at each city is good. But the night train from Salzburg to Venice : will you be in only one train car ? And will the train car that you will be in be disconnected from a train, and connected to another train, during the night ? What is the total number of hours of that night train trip ? Your train car might tilt to a side when the train is on track that curves to the right or to the left.
I would probably add the day to Salzburg as well. You can do a day trip if you wish, but after so much traveling you might want a little down time with your son and Salzburg is a good place to do that. It is smaller and less chaotic so you can do wandering around, visit parks and gardens and just relax a bit after a rather hectic few days.
I can not even imagine that you have an extra day anywhere.. this is a tour of train stations to me.. do you mean two nights in one city( as in only one full day )... I would add that "extra " day to Paris .. 7 days is still what many would consider not a very long visit to a city like this.. and you likely haven't thought of all the fun daytrips you could do using it as a hub.. look up "Provins" bet your child would enjoy that a lot!
It can be stressful and/or tiring to adjust to each new location - getting oriented to your hotel's location, navigating to the various sights, different languages, different transportation systems and you'll be packing and unpacking every 2 or 3 days. You will be on the go for over 2 weeks with little time to relax and there's no down-time. On paper, it looks easy and reasonable. Be honest with yourselves - will all of you be comfortable at this fast pace?
What are you planning to see and do in each location? 2.5 days in Paris is very little, especially since your first day and perhaps your second you are likely to have jetlag, and lines can be long for the top attractions, which are not necessarily close together. The same goes for Rome, another big city with lots of distance between sights and long lines.
You don't have 2 days in Florence. It can take an hour just to get to the train station in Venice, you need at least a few minutes in the station to find and board your train, then you have to go to your hotel in Florence to drop your luggage. The better part of 1/2 day will be gone before you start sightseeing.
