I finally have a travel insurance claim to report on!

Okay, I realize we don’t really want to have claims, but I can report excellent service and claims processing by Allianz.

I bought a very cheap ($99) medical policy covering both my son and his wife on a trip we were going on in Europe. They would not have had coverage otherwise. We didn’t need to make a medical claim, but one of the features it had was travel delay. A flight cancellation/reschedule on one airline resulted in a $369 change fee on another airline to move the tickets by a day. I filed a claim for that amount on Oct 24th online. Oct 30th the claim was approved and a check mailed out for that amount.

I realize claims may not always be processed that quickly, but I was very pleased with this experience and would definitely use Allianz again.

I also have a positive experience to report with Generali Global Assistance & Insurance Services which insured my two VRBO rentals in Italy that were past their cancel-by date. We were supposed to be in Italy now but had to cancel the trip at the last minute due to a medical emergency. I had purchased the cancellation insurance when I booked my 2 VRBO rentals and I just received a reimbursement from the insurance company for both of them. The online claims process was pretty straightforward and I'm pleased to get my full refund back. Yay!

Carol now retired, that is so good to hear! Thanks for reporting your experience.
I bought an Allianz annual policy last year but, fortunately, did not have a claim. I plan to buy another annual policy for next year’s trip, plus another Medjet policy.

Thanks, Carol now retired. We've decided to switch to annual policies, and Allianz has been highly recommended by others. It's good to hear from someone who had such good experience with a claim.

We also buy annual policies with Allianz. One thing to keep in mind is that you should buy the policy when you purchase your plane tickets or non refundable lodging. I was advised that we would be covered if something were to happen between the dates of purchase and when we actually leave and if we waited until close to our departure date we would only be covered from that date forward. Now I just renew our policy every year.

I'm dealing with a claim right now for a doctors visit in Vienna with full receipt. They are now asking me for copies of my boarding passes to prove I made the trip. Uh, how else could I have made that American Express charge??

Carol (NR), Thanks for sharing that. Like with airlines, we tend to only hear the drama, and it's good to know people have "as expected" experiences.

Carol, good tip about buying the policy as soon as we've put some money down. I'll be flight shopping in a week or two, so will buy the annual policy first.

Thanks, Carol.

phred, boarding pass?! I guess I could take a screen shot of my phone screen. Hmm, maybe I should go back to paper passes.

Marty, when we had a flight problem with British Air this year that meant we missed a flight, they gave us paper boarding passes for the flight to which they moved us, and told us to be sure to keep them as well as any receipts for meals, transportation to the alternate airport, etc. We were told that we'd need them when we made a claim for expenses.

We did save all that, and had no problem being reimbursed for our expenses.
