We are seniors with a Humana Advantage plan, and they have worldwide coverage. I understand that you must go to an emergency room at a hospital for coverage. Has anyone used this plan for a medical problem overseas? If so how well did this cover the medical expense? Thanks for your reply.
Joe, I have different insurance, but I'd seek a definition of "emergency room"--preferably in writing. Take a look at the written policy materials to see exactly what they say. Different terminology would certainly be used in Europe, and in any case, lots of things for which one wouldn't go to an emergency room in the US would still need a doctor's attention if one was overseas.
In general, medical treatment costs considerably less (on average) in Europe than it does in the US. Something like emergency surgery could still be costly, of course. The biggest-ticket worry for me is the possibility that I would need medical evacuation back home, which can cost more than $100,000. I think only specialized medical-evacuation policies cover that.
You need to review and understand the "fine print" of your insurance benefits. I would especially check how the Advantage plan addresses out-of-network providers and medical evacuation/transport and co-pays associated with out-of-network providers.
Traditional Medicare Parts A & B do not cover foreign travel. Some Supplemental plans cover up to $50,000 lifetime after deductibles and copays.
If the plan documents you have are not clear about overseas coverage, then a call to Humana would get you the best answer
I suspect you would have to pay the provider, then submit a claim with Humana for reimbursement, subject to the applicable deductible and co-pay terms.
Also check on whether Humana would accept medical invoices in the language of the country where you received service. If it requires submission of an English translation, that might in some cases be less expensive to obtain while in Europe. (I'm thinking particularly about the lower-cost countries.)
