How to split 6 days between Amsterdam. Antwerp and Bruges

Hello.

We have a 14 day family trip planned for the summer. We have booked 8 days in Paris and are planning to also visit Antwerp, Bruges and Amsterdam. At first, we were just going to do one day in Antwerp, 1 day in Bruges and the rest in Amsterdam, but after some more reading are wondering if we should spend less time in Amsterdam and more time in Bruges and/or Antwerp.

The family group consists of four adults and two teenagers. Interests are history, art, architecture, food (not beer!), soaking up the atmosphere, and (because of the teenagers) “cool” shops

Would love some ideas and suggestions how to best split up the six days over the three cities

Seems you may not be taking into account the travel time between destinations, although not too much time but every hour counts. I recommend to strik 1-2 days in Paris and fo for minimum 2 nights in each of the three.

It really depends on what you want to see in each city. Make a list of what you want to do/see in Bruges and Antwerp and estimate how much time that will take. And because each of those days will also entail intercity travel, don't forget to factor that in as well. I tend to find it better to think in nights in each city, vs days when planning.

Personally, Bruges is a favourite place. And considering how easy it is to get teens out of bed in the morning ( /s ) you likely wouldn't even get to Bruges from Paris much before noon. So a single night, and leaving the next day wouldn't be enough for me. OTOH, there isn't a whole lot that I find compelling in Antwerp, so I could be satisfied with a day visit, arriving in the morning and continuing to Amsterdam after dinner that evening. I can definitely see the advantage of taking a day from Paris if that will work for you.

But as with most things, interests are subjective, thus so are itineraries and YMMV.

Maybe consider staying in Ghent? Ghent is a great town and checks your wish list boxes. Also, Ghent is an easy train ride to BOTH Bruges and Antwerp. Approximately 20 mins Ghent to Bruges and about an hour between Ghent and Antwerp while Antwerp and Bruges are approximately an hour and a half apart. All 3 cities are worth seeing. I suggest you do a search here as there are hundreds of forum chats diving in on the Bruges vs Antwerp vs Ghent topic.

Hi there and welcome to the Forum! Just checking if the 14 days include arrival and departure days? If so, realistically, you would have 8 nights in Paris, then a travel day somewhere, let's say Bruges or maybe Ghent for 2 nights, and that would leave you 2 nights in Amsterdam - If you haven't booked your flights, you could consider flying into Paris and out of Amsterdam, would that work? Or perhaps take one night away from Paris, but that might not be what you want to do.

I too wondered about staying in Ghent, here's a wonderful blog about it (no affiliation), https://michelledamiani.com/around-the-world/ignore-the-guidebooks-choose-ghent.

Good luck and do let us know how your plans progress!

My personal recommendation, because I avoid unnecessary hotel changes, is to sleep in Antwerp (much larger than the other Flanders stops) and day trip (unreserved local trains, five or so per hour) to the other places. Note that the historic centers are not right at the train stations.

There are direct premium trains Paris-Antwerp. Amsterdam is a major city, worth five nights. Bruges is a spur trip, off the main train lines, regarding say, Amsterdam.

Karim,
Just a question. You say you have booked 8 days in Paris. Do you mean 8 nights in a hotel? Your first day will be a light/short one depending on where you are coming from and when you arrive. That leaves you 7 more nights in Paris, or 6 full days. Listen to what the other posters say about traveling between locations, then you can decide more realistically about where to stay for the other nights. And do note about departure day. FWIW I like Bruges, but the Ghent suggestion is a good one.

I would never spend less time in Paris so I could spend more time in Belgium and the Netherlands. I say that even as I acknowledge that the Rijksmuseum is one of the greatest in the world, and that Bruges and Ghent are charming and lovely.
