How to spend 4 days in Spain in late October

Planning a transatlantic cruise from Barcelona Oct. 28 but would like to fly in 5 days in advance to see some of Spain. Cruise will cover Malaga and Majorca so not interested in those locations prior to cruise. Can fly into Madrid or Barcelona but need to end up in Barcelona at least a day before cruise. Question is: Should we just spend the 4 or 5 days in Barcelona and maybe take a few day trips (to where?) or spend half time in Madrid (with day trips) and end in Barcelona? Also, going on a 15-day cruise requires more suitcases than we care to carry during pre-cruise visit. I wonder if we can fly into Barcelona and store most of our luggage somewhere for 5 days. Don't want to rent a car. Prefer train travel.
Appreciate suggestions.

To answer your last question... Ask the hotel that you will be staying at the night before you debark on the cruise to hold it. Most hotels will. Ask before you book, if they say the won't/can't call another hotel.

Personally I would stay in Barcelona, there is more than enough to see and you could do a day trip. Or two days in Madrid and train to Barcelona for three is equally doable. Need to rethink your luggage. We have been on seven European cruise and only take two carryon bags and one rolling carryon bag -- 3 bags total for the two of us for the last six cruise. It is embarrassing to admit how much needless luggage we took on that first one.
