How to navigate customs when returning to the USAS

I am returning to the USA after a two month stay in Italy. I will fly though
CDG Paris to JFK with an arrival time of 8:45pm. My connecting flight to ROC departs at 10:59pm. I believe international flights use terminal 1 and Delta is in terminal 4. That means i have to go through security upon entering the Delta terminal. I have a very short time to exit the plane, get my bags, go through customs, recheck my bags, go through security and to make it top Delta for my return flight to ROC. Help!!

All terminals at JFK have immigration and customs. Which terminal you use depends on your airline.

Which airline are you flying from CDG to JFK? If it's Delta then both flights will be at T4.

To save time at Immigration and customs, download the Mobile Passport Control app and learn to use it prior to your trip.

Just curious. Is your return flight to the US all on one ticket? If so, I would assume you don't have to pick up your bags and recheck them, that they will be scanned and transferred to your last plane without you. When we returned from Egypt our bags were transferred to our second leg without us getting them. However, our plane change was in Frankfurt and we did go through customs at our final destination, which was in the US. Since you change in the US, maybe you will have to pick them up and recheck them. Anyone have knowledge about this?

Yes, for any incoming flight to the US, except for those few from places with US preclearance (such as Dublin and Canadian airports), you will need to pick up your bag after immigration, then go through Customs (just a walk through unless you are stopped or have something to declare), then you will need to check your bag again for your US domestic connection. This is quick, it will already be tagged to your final destination so it’s just a drop off at the collection point, but it needs to be done and sometimes there will be a wait for your bag to arrive if you have gotten through immigration quickly.

And you often do need to go through security again at US airports when connecting international to domestic, regardless whether it’s the same airline or terminal. This would be after rechecking your luggage. This can vary according to the particular airport layout but I think it is the case at JFK.

To add to what has been stated, you will drop your checked to final destination bag right after you exit customs. There will be baggage handlers there to assist you. You don't take your bag out to the airline counters. Then you will have to go through TSA for your domestic flight. If your connection is in another terminal you should go through TSA at that terminal.

To answer Judy--you go through immigration when you enter the US from abroad, and you must retrieve your luggage and pass through customs presumably walk on by unless you have stuff to declare), and then re-check them for your onward domestic flight. They cannot be checked through. Then trip you spoke of you were presumably routed airside through Frankfurt and never entered the Schengen Zone, so your bags could also be directly passed through to your next flight.

Just another person chiming in that he's, you have to retrieve and recheck any checked bag(s) once you have arrived af your first U.S. airport from abroad, then go through security at your re-entry airport.

Luckily though the place to re-check the bag after you have collected it at baggage claim is right there - very easy, and never a line.
