How to get to Split from Eastern Europe?

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know the best way to get to Split from Eastern Europe in the summer? I was planning on flying as it seems like a time consuming process to get there by train/bus. I can work my plans to leave from any of the following cities: Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Berlin, and possibly Munich. I was ideally thinking of taking the train from Budapest to Zagreb and then flying to Split, but I'm not sure if there might be an easier or less costly option. Thanks!

From Zagreb by train or bus. From other cities the best would be to fly. Train would take too long.

@ lisa

welcome.

to me,it will depend on how you want to do it. If you like trains/buses, then that would be it. If you dont want to spend alot of time in them, then flying. How much time is acceptable for you? everyone is differernt.

happy trails.

I was going to say stay in Budapest because its the best of the towns on your list. So I checked and Austrian Air has a flight to Split with a change in Vienna. So then I thought, okay, tell Lisa to spend a week in Budapest then the train up to Vienna for a night or two and then catch the direct flight to Split. Odd thing, the flight out of Vienna (about USD380) cost more than the flight out of Budapest (about USD 350) despite the fact that the second leg on the Budapest flight was the same leg you would take from Vienna. Strange.

When you get over there and you are having the time of your life in the best unspoiled by tourism places left in Europe; and when you are telling the locals how wonderful they are; then really impress them by telling them how much you enjoy CENTRAL Europe.

If you choose Budapest let me know. Glad to help.

It looks like my options are:

  • Night train from Budapest to Split. The only issue that I'm concerned about is time. The train gets to Split about 9:00 Saturday and I need to be there for sure by 11:30.

-Fly direct Vienna to Split and Split to my next destination(currently undecided) and it was about $300CAD depending on where I chose. I looked up Budapest to Split and Split to next destination and it was $350CAD.

So I'm leaning towards flying out of Vienna as it is so much faster and I won't have to worry about sleeping on a night train and have a little bit more cushion for time.

I will definitely be visiting Budapest though, hopefully for 4 or 5 nights. I've heard nothing but good things about it! I will remember to tell them Central Europe despite the habit I've picked up from my "Eastern Europe" guidebook.

Thanks everyone for all your help!
