We are traveling to Monaco for a day trip and wondering what to wear? Are there places to change into swim-wear? How do you dress nice for shopping/casino and lay-out at the beach?
What Nigel said... I'll add that if you are going during a summer month, be sure to dress in breezy, cool clothing as it gets HOT there. There are nice public toilets in Monaco, and you should be able to find a place to change. The ladies can carry a nice, small tote bag with swimsuits and small towels.
Personally I don't remember any beach in the immediate Monaco area. Second, this is the play ground of the ultra wealth and they just barely tolerate the tourist. So the expectation is that you dress well if you are going to the casino. There is a small public area in the casino which rift raft are allowed to enter. Next to the casino is the Ritz Carlton which you will not be allowed to enter no matter how well you are dressed. Also, keep in mind, that you are constantly monitored via camera - indoor and out. It is a little spooky so behave.
{not} any beach in the immediate Monaco area. Eh? The are two well used public beaches, used mostly by residents. Fully half of the eastern shore of Monaco is taken up by the Plage du Larvotto. It is easy to get to by bus or can be walked to quite easily from higher eastern parts. There are escalators and stairs. There is also a beach long underground car park which is very easy to get to. There are changing cabins available. It is not free but not particularly expensive. The water is quite shallow then drops off. It is unbelievably clear water. When we were last there, last year in May, we saw large fish very close to shore. The beach is small gravel. Plage Marquet is just (by a couple of hundred metres or so) over the west border in France in Cap-d'Ail and is along part of a continuous foot path along the rocks towards Nice. It is predominantly used by French and Monagasques and is less well finished out and less polished. There are a number of eating and drinking establishments in the immediate vicinity and an outdoor car park. Also in the immediate vicinity is the Heliport, Princess Grace's Rose Garden and David Coulthard's Hotel Columbus; as well as the Cap-d'Ail port. and they just barely tolerate the tourist. What absolute piffle. I have been to the Principality many many times over the years and I have always felt that I and other tourists were very welcomed. And we don't even go during the Grand Prix when many many tourists arrive. constantly monitored via camera
and the crime rate is virtually nonexistent. Compare with Nice. I do grant that proper dress is required in proper places, the rest of the Principality welcome all no matter how dressed.
... continued ... and how many other places can boast a McDonalds, with McDonalds prices and free wifi and a McCafe, with picture windows over the port, views of the Rocher and the gardens coming down the cliff? Monaco even has a shopping centre anchored by a branch of the French Hyper-Marches - Carrefour. Let me tell you, nobody dresses up to go there. You can find just what you want in Monaco, you just have to look.
To echo what has been said and hopefully get us back on track, if you're going to the casino or some other "high class" joint you should dress well. Otherwise, your normal tourist attire will do.
If the beaches are like the ones in Nice, you need to be prepared for some differences to Galveston. There will probably be some topless folks.
For those interested in the beaches of Monaco, there is of course a website or 2 showing photos of said beach: http://www.destination360.com/europe/monaco/monaco-beaches
Thanks Dina for your helpful comment.
