how to carry a laptop through the flights and trains

I am trying to figure out the best way to carry my computer without losing it or damaging it. Actually it is for my daughter who will need it for her engineering classes in Osnabruck and then will travel for several weeks: Paris, Barcelona, Marseille, Nice.

This seems an odd question but here goes..... When travelling (by plane or train) it is in my hand luggage, in a protective cover. You need to remove it at security in airports. My hand luggage is generally a small rolling bag with a padded slot for the laptop. Others prefer a backpack, just personal choice. Walking about a city, going to classes, I would have it in a large handbag or possibly a backpack. Losing it is just something to be very aware of, the same as any other personal possession. You wouldn't for example leave it on a table in a cafe while you went to the bathroom. In an appropriate cover/case it should not be damaged. As tempting as it is, I also never separate the power cord from the laptop if travelling by plane in case my checked luggage goes astray.

Are you wondering if she should carry it with her when she is out visiting tourist sites or just about the planes and trains? If it is just the trains and planes then the advice above is perfect. I don't see any difference between carrying my business laptop on Delta between NYC and Cincinnati or on Amtrak between NYC and Boston or Philadelphia vs carrying it on American between JFK and London and the train between London and York, for example. You do want the protective sleeve and I do keep my power cord with me in the carry on as well. For a long flight she might want to invest in the attachment that lets her plug in on the longer flights. When I've had my computer with me hotels, I've not been worried about leaving it in the room. I'm not staying in 5 star hotels, but I will admit for the most part I've been in smaller towns and so less concern about thievery as they are generally family run places where they know their staff intimately. I don't think mine would fit in the safes. If I were concerned I would put it in my suitcase and lock it. If she is using a backpack there are still usually options for securing it. Pam

Always have it in your carry-on luggage when flying. You have to remove it and scan it seperately at security. On trains, keep it in a day bag or satchel, or in your smaller carry-on type luggage. I will take it with me if using the restroom or going to the snack car. I have no problem leaving it in my hotel, but ALWAYS lock it in my luggage out of site. I don't worry about hotel staff stealing it (though that does happen). But when cleaning rooms, your door will be left open and sometimes cleaning staff will work in several rooms at once. Anyone could walk by, see a laptop (or other valuable) laying in the open, and steal it in a flash. Hope that answers your question.

One more thing: be sure your daughter's laptop is labeled with her name.
