Hello all, We're flying Lufthansa out of San Francisco to Frankfurt then to our destination, Venice. According to the Lufthansa website, the maxium wieght of a carry on is 8kg or 17.6 pounds. Our carry ons generally max out at about 20-25 lbs with clothes and electronic gear. We've flown United to Italy in the past and came back with Lufthansa (they have a resiprical relationship) and had no problems with a carry on that exceded their weight limit. Has anyone been able to bring a carry-on that exceded the Lufthansa carry-on wieght limit? Or will the carry-ons have to be checked bags? Regards, David
You could be ok, long story, but I origionally was going to check my carry one as my third piece of luggage since I was flying business class. A portion of my flight was codeshare Lufthansa, and they only allow 2 pieces.Because I asked to check it, the gate agent suspected it was over weight and made me weigh it. I was way over and he was going to charge me 175 Euros for a one hour flight! Long story short, he told me I could get away with 12 kg, and with a little shuffling thanks to a purse that can expand and hold a lot, I was able to avoid the fee. While this isn't a guaranteed answer, the best bet for you if your only a little over is to avoid check in. Assuming your only bringing carry on, check in online, by your mobile phone or at one of the kiosks. Then you can go through straight through security and your much more likely to make it on the plane without your luggage being weighed.
We flew SAS (owned by Lufthansa and same carry on restrictions) this year direct to Copenhagen. At the terminal we did notice the gate attendent going around checking bags for size and also telling people they could only have one bag. We had gone out of our way to ensure we were under 18 lbs. but our bags were never weighed........... It seemed the bags he was checking were clearly packed to overflowing even though they were austensibly carrry-on bags......... As I recall the only people he talked to about one bag were people carrying multiple shopping bags, purses and personal items in addition to their carry-on. We reduced everything to one bag (not one bag plus a personal item)......... I think we could have gotten away with 20 lbs. or so without a problem - as long as the bags are under 22 inches (21 inches or less) and not loaded to bursting.
One time I checked in at the Lufthansa counter in Denver, and they asked me if I was checking luggage. When I said, "no", they weighed my carryon bag. No problem, it was a pound or so under. . . . . . ¶ Last year when I flew back with a change in Düsseldorf, I noticed a lot of gate passenger's bags had tags (green, I think) indicating that their bags had been cleared at checkin for carryon (either size, or weight, or both).
Our experience with Lufthansa is that they are more concerned about size than weight. Have stood in a couple of check in line where every carryon bag was being place in a size box and all luggage with wheel was failing. When it came to our bags which look small but were over weight (22 lb), they looked closely at them but said OK. I think you are totally at the mercy of the gate personal doing the checking.
Lee brings up a good point. We never go through check in. We always check in and print our boarding passes online. When we arrive at the airport we head straight to the gate (because we don't check anything).............. If you are at check-in, it's pretty easy for them to weigh your bag there with their scales. If you are lining up to check in, I wouldn't be surprised if they did weigh it.
Thanks everyone for your input. We'll try to pack light and see if we can squeak by. Regards, David
We're flying from Charlotte to Munich tomorrow... I'm also very concerned about the size limitation of checked luggage (cumulative 158cm of l/w/h). I can handle the weight limitations, but all of our larger bags are 3-5cm over the 158cm limitation. Does anyone have experience with Lufthansa measuring baggage? Thanks!
I just flew Lufthansa a few weeks ago Frankfurt to Munich and Munich to Frankfurt. I did not see them weighing or measuring any bags, and several people had bags that appeared quite a bit over the size limits. Our bags were just within the size limits and many bags being brought on were bigger than ours. That doesn't mean whoever is there at the time couldn't decide to measure/weigh.
As I posted earlier, our experience with Lufthansa is that focus on size by making you put your bag in the sizing box. If it didn't completely fit - wheels, handle, etc. - it was checked. No one is standing there with a tape measure.
