How much time is needed to make a connecting flight at Rome airport?

We are flying out of Venice at 10:00 a.m. to Rome, arriving at 11:05. Our connecting international flight leaves at 1:35 p.m. the same day. We will have to pick up our luggage and go through security in Rome as we change airlines. Will this be enough time to make the connection, pending everything is on time?

Doubt it. Say you're going to FCO on an Easyjet or like airline, 50-50 chance that plane would be parked on the tarmac away from the terminal which increases the time for you and baggage reaching the terminal and then moving to T5; also, FCO is nortorious for the time it sometimes takes for baggage to get delivered to the belt. We experienced 2 such issues, once flying from Palermo, it took longer for bags to get to the belt than the flight, and a second time, coming from Cagliari, we landed at lunchtime and bags sat on the tarmac for over an hour before they picked them up and delivered them.

It is dice roll. The bigger problem is that you have to go through check in for your international flight, flight security, and exit immigration. The recommended time for that is about three hours. At 1.30 the lines could be long because that is a popular time for departures and several planes could be departing in that time period. You would be fine if you were connecting in Rome on one ticket. Doing carry on would also provide an advantage. It is too tight for us.

PS. I am curious. It appears you have already made the reservation, so why are you asking the question, now????

We fly Air Aitalia from Venice to Rome. We fly Air Canada from Rome to Toronto direct, so two separate bookings. The bookings were made based on connection times required in Canada. It is sounding like it is not quite the same in Italy. I would rather straighten this out now, than be in panic mode in the Rome airport. Pretty sure that will mean extra $$$.
Thanks for all your feedback!

It is the same in Italy IF it is a standard connection between European cities but what you overlooked is that your are departing the Schengen zone and you need to go through immigration. If just connecting to another European flight, you would just walk off one plane and on to the other unless you need to check luggage then it would be another checkin and a security line. It is the amount of time need for immigration that is the big unknown. You probably will make it but if you don't if is a big problem.
