My sister and I (20 and 22) will be in Rome 6 days and Greece 12 days. What is a reasonable amount of money to budget for everything other than rooms and breakfast.
A "reasonable amount" depends on what you plan to do, other than sleep and eat breakfast. If you are big shoppers and will buy lots of expensive souvenirs, you will need much money. Will you be taking lots of tours?
Will you scuba, hike, go boating, take taxis everywhere or use public transport? Will you buy groceries and cook your dinners or will you eat out in evenings?
Thanks Paul, all good questions. No we're not big shoppers, only small souvenirs. We plan on seeing a few noteworthy museums in Rome, maybe a day side trip via bus. On the Greek islands we'll be hiking and going to the beach. Will buy groceries/cook and maybe eat out 10-15 times the whole trip. We're starving college students.
Hi Jerri:
I took a dozen college students to Italy last year. We quickly learned to shop where locals shop--like local grocery stores, etc. There, away from the tourist areas, prices were reasonable. I soon used what I called the "Coca Cola Test." I would judge a store, restaurant, etc. by the cost of a Coke because that told me how much they charged for other things. For instance, local grocery stores, etc. charged a euro or so for a Coke. That same Coke cost 5 euros just outside the Vatican!!!
Good luck!!
