Just wondering how many / what combination of credit and debit cards everyone takes when traveling to Europe. My husband and I are thinking of taking the following cards... our regular Visa card from our credit union with a 1% foreign transaction fee, our USAA Mastercard chip and pin (also 1% foreign transaction fee). My credit union debit card and another debit card tied to a small business account. Does this sound about right? Do you take debit cards tied to separate accounts or just 2 debit cards to the same account?
Sounds perfect. We take debit cards tied to separate accounts.
I have two different accounts at the same credit union. One account is for travel. The other is my regular account. I also have a Visa credit card with the credit union. I take a debit card from each account and my husband takes a debit card from our regular account. We take the CU Visa card and our United Miles Plus Visa card.
The advantage of having the two different accounts at the same credit union is that money can be transferred back and forth between accounts.
We usually take a debit card tied to our checking account and two different kinds of credit cards; Master Card and Visa. That seems to work for us no matter where we are in Europe.
I think you are fine with what you plan to take. When I am traveling alone I take one credit card, and two debit cards from two different accounts at two different institutions. If I am traveling with a partner, I take a credit card and a debit card. My travel partner also has a credit card and debit card. My main concern is being able to get cash when needed. If one card would stop working, was lost or for whatever reason I needed a back-up, I have a 2nd one, even it the 2nd one is my travel partner's card and I have to reimburse them. I have never actually had a card get lost or stop working completely, but I like to be prepared!
Your plan sounds good. I travel alone and I bring 2 debit cards from separate institutions (for getting cash from ATMs) and 1 credit card for possible large purchases (and because it's sometimes needed for train tickets). I always keep them in different places so if I lose one or it doesn't work I have a backup.
I take a credit card, and my wife takes her own credit card, separate accounts. Each of us takes a debit card from our joint checking account. Seems to be enough. If one is lost or stolen, which hasn't happened, we have the other.
I'm sure you know to contact Visa, Mastercard, and your credit union to let them know your plans so they don't cancel your cards when they see transactions in Europe. And to verify, and if necessary increase, your withdrawal limits on the debit cards.
2 ATM cards from different banks. I am more worried about the bank's system being down than losing a card. Two credit cards.
I take 2 credit cards and my ATM card.
We also take 2 ATM cards from 2 different banks and 2 credit cards.
2 debit cards (one Schwab no-fee) on two separate banks and 2 separate (no-foreign-transaction-fee) credit cards PLUS one Amex for auto rentals to get their insurance.
I take two debit cards - one from a local credit union (no fees), and one from an online bank (Ally - fee 1%). I also carry a VISA and a Mastercard with low fees.
Ditto Paul separate account ATM. Two credit cards. One is chip and pin master card and one no-fee visa. I like back ups!
If you travel solo with two debit cards (in case, for backup), one goes in the money belt.. Any suggestions where to keep the second one far away from pickpockets and far away the other debit card at the same time?
If traveling without my husband, I have a debit card and a credit card. Traveling with him, we end up with two debit cards to the same account, and two credit cards to the same account. Once he did bring our extra credit card, but that account has closed since. I guess we don't have much diversification!
Hi,
I don't know about traveling solo, but we don't bring 2 ATM cards and 2 CC's for worry of pickpockets, it's just in case an account gets accidentally frozen or some other mishap.
Paul
2 credit cards from two different banks, two debit cards from two different bank accounts and two separate banks..)if with hubby)
When on my own I bring one of each.
A credit and debit card each. Since each represented a unique account, four cards meant two credit card accounts (primary and backup) and two debit cards accounts for ATMs. The checking accounts were set up so we could transfer funds between the two - transfer the balance if needed. Later, I added an American Express card specifically for car rentals - because they offer a really good CDW deal.
