It seems that some people here have been to a small number of countries multiple times, while a few others seem to have visited almost as many as Hilary Clinton. I have a friend who's been to all 7 continents, but after hearing about her sea voyages around Antarctica, I realized I'd never be able to do that. Do you keep track? Or did you have to sit down and count to answer?
" I'm curious if anyone here has ever visited those axis of evil countries." Does Serbia under Milosevic count? If so, then yes.
Only 12.... As someone said, so may countries, so little money (and time). Doubt I'll grow that much. It's Italy all year this year!
I just counted up 26 for me. Mostly Europe and Caribbean. We can't stay away from Italy (4th trip coming in October) and Greece (16 islands so far).
16, if you count the UK as 1 (instead of 3 out of 4 that I have visited). I've done both- visit some only once and others - especially the UK multiple times. Some that I've only visited once- once was enough, others- I plan to return at least once (maybe lots) more. Visited (# of times) Austria (5), Germany(1), Netherlands(1), Sweden(1), Denmark(1), Switzerland(1), Norway(2), UK (40+) (England, Wales, Scotland), Republic of Ireland(1), France(1), Hungary(1), Luxeumburg(1), Hong Kong(1), Australia(1), Mexico (1), Bahamas (3) Had planned but did not get to do (yet): photographic safari to 3+ African countries; Japan; Singapore, New Zeland Still on bucket list: all above plus Antartic cruise, mailand China, Korea, Saudia Arabia, Israel, Lebannon, Brazil, Argentian, Chile and possibly other S. American countries, Panama,Russia and other asian countries.
Absolutely MUST return to Hong Kong and see mainland China, see more of Australia (only saw Sydney area)
I count sixteen different countries I've been to.
Between 70-75 depending on how you treat certain territories (Gibraltar, Palestine, N. Cyprus...)
Switzerland France Germany Italy Spain Nederlands Austria Germany UK USA Jamaica St Marten/St Martin Grand Cayman Mexico Greece Monaco and Vatican ( which really put together still only count as 1/2 a country, lol ) To be fair, some of these were drop ins ( cruise stops in the Caribbean, but mulitple times) I would say bulk of time or travels have been to the USA( Hawaii, California,Nevada, Oregon,Washington , Florida) , France , UK, and Italy. Plus spent 2 weeks on the Greek Islands I have never forgotten.. one day will return! Next on our list may be Costa Rica!
Personally not interested in either Japan( no particular reason, just not interested) or China( and wouldn't go to China if you paid me to ,, for polictical/human rights reasons I will not elaborate on ) Would love to visit Australia, Egypt, Israel,South Pacific( Cook Islands and Fiji) ... only another 20-30s left to to all this, better get cracking and hope the health maintains decent. lol
28. 29, if you let me count Vatican City. Plus 46 of the 50 states.
27 if you let me count Vatican City (and not count just changing planes in Dublin). That's not so many perhaps, but then again 25 of those have come in just the last six years.
When I'm asked this question, as a memory aid, I roll the list off in the order I visited them for the first time (not including the US, where I was born): Canada, Bahamas, UK, Ireland, Macedonia, Serbia/Kosovo, Bulgaria, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Netherlands, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Qatar, Turkey, Liechtenstein, Norway, Denmark, and Italy. Next up later on this year, Finland and Sweden for the first time. So, 27 if you consider Kosovo and Serbia separate countries, 26 if you think Kosovo is still a part of Serbia. 29 or 28 by the end of the year. I don't see myself adding any new countries for a long time after I go to Sweden later on this year.
I've been to 30, counting cruise stops (not that many and I spent a WHOLE day and usually lots of money too). Then there are 5 more I have definite plans to visit with a year. I didn't count Hong Kong or Macao as separate from China, but I think they should count - you need a passport to enter from China (or each other) and get a visa stamp and they have separate currencies. And no I do not think Vatican City counts as a separate country. I will give you the Palestinian Authority since it is mostly an autonomous region. I guess the same goes for northern Cyprus.
A couple of mine don't exist anymore, East Germany, and Czechoslovakia. My total, though, is 15. I tend to go back to places I have been (four times to Ireland, twice now to Spain, with more planned).
97. I don't double-count the ones that have changed names. Antarctica ain't a country. I did a count a couple of months ago - - trying like heck to hit a hundred, probably won't in this lifetime.
No, but it is a continent :-) Wow, Ed. I think you must be the winner. Care to post your list? Maybe we can help you find 3 more . . .
I don't keep track. I had to sit and write them all down to come up with my total of 16 and hope I haven't missed any. I'm curious to see if the majority, especially for Ed were trips for business or pleasure. Of my 16, 4 have been for business (with pleasure thrown in of course).
Only 9. :( So many places, so little money.
I can't get out of Italy!
19 I think, not counting little principalities or the seperate UK states. Almost all in Europe.
Ed - you need to pick up the pace. There are 192 nations in the UN.
Especially in light of last week's thread about Iran, I'm curious if anyone here has ever visited those axis of evil countries...can't even remember which were tagged as belonging to the axis, but I'm thinking specifically about Iran or the DPRK. What about Cuba...maybe before Fidel?
UK (x4), Russia (x2, once as part of the USSR), Canada (x2), Finland, France, Spain, Austria, Czech Republic, Italy, and Uzbekistan, all once. Vatican City, if you like. Oh and a few Caribbean islands that belong to one or another countries. Gosh, when it's written out like that is seems so little. : (
Not enough to keep me happy! Here's my list: USA (countless times) Dominican Republic Jamaica England (2 times) Scotland Wales Poland Czech Republic Austria (2 times) Italy (2 times) France (2 times) Spain
And on a cruise - Jamaica (again), Mexico, Cayman Islands. Next up: China in September (close enough to start a countdown!), France for Christmas (fingers crossed), and Scotland again in May.
So far only 12, some only once, others numerous times...Canada, France, Poland, Belgium, Denmark (only at the Copenhagen airport), Austria, Germany, Czech Rep. Hungary, England, Sweden, Holland. I had to think about it. Still to be visited, the short list: Japan, China, Finland, Italy, Lithuania, Slovenia
OOppsss! Left out Canada- twice. so 17!
I have always wondered how people handle the "used to be Yugoslavia, now Croatia" question. Going with Ed's policy of not double counting, I have been to 36. As far as axis of evil goes, I visited the USSR, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia and Hungary in the Iron Curtain days. It has been fascinating to return to some of these places more recently.
Up next: Christmas in Australia-continent #6!
7 Countries. Probably will keep going back to the most of the ones we've vsited before. Mexico - one trip Liechtenstein - one trip (with our Swiss trip below) Switzerland - one trip Italy (Dolomites/Sud Tirol) - 4 trips Canada - 7 or 8 trips Austria - 8 trips
Germany - 8 trips That's it. Paul
Have never counted before...thought it was about 20, but figured it out and came up with 31.... all the usual suspects many times....UK, France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Check Republic, Hungary, etc. A few only once ie. Romania, Denmark, Portugal, Morocco, Turkey, etc. A few I go most every year...Mexico or Guatemala or Grand Cayman.
Next on the list I think is Iceland and Sweden, Norway, Finland or whatever opportunity comes up. Also Vietnam is intriguing to me. @Ed....a few favorites???? Where else do you want to go? @Chani... ok, so there is a tour company I am thinking of using for a group of photographers and I want to try them out by myself first... they have some specials coming up in Nov. and one is a trip to Israel...give me your sales pitch:))
I had to count and came up with 16 counting Vatican City....(USA, Canada, Bahamas, UK, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, Vatican City, Switzerland, France, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Czech Republic.) Soon to add a few more, and soooo many more I hope to add some day.
Chani - Great question - I actually had to sit down and count. I came up with 21 different countries so far... I am torn between returning to a country that intrigues me to keep exploring and going to new countries. Also, almost every trip has to end in London for a full day of shopping and theatre - plus it's always an easy connection for the nonstop flight home. I didn't realize until I counted I was up to 10 stopovers in London and 5 in Paris. I have Israel and Jordan high on my list of my next countries, but I'm being persuaded into going to Patagonia first. My list so far: Mexico, Canada, UK, France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Slovakia, Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Greece, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia/Hertzegovina, Turkey, Denmark, Sweden
Only 16, I'm afraid, or 17 if you count Texas.
For us oldies, how do we count Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia? The old way or the new way?
I had to make a list and count them up. Thirty, only counting places where I have stayed the night. I didn't count the principalities and countries where I have only seen the airport or a view from the train window.
My list: Ireland, England (4x), France (2x), Italy (2x), Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, Greece, Spain, Venezuela, Mexico and Canada (3x).
I think these responses are interesting...does anyone travel to South America. Great travel bargain and wonderful culture,
food, museums, etc. What gives? No RS Guide Books?
WHen I look at y'alls lists, I'm embarassed to say only 5: Germany, Netherlands,Switzerland, Austria and Hungary. I should add three more next May -Russia, Finland and Estonia.
I've been to a half-dozen Caribbean islands and Cozumel, but those 8 hour cruise stops don't seem worth counting. I can't really count Canada since I grew up there. Does Miami count as another country? (maybe a half?)
Over 60 countries. Good question: I had to sit down and work it out (with a map). I didn't count the dozen or so countries where I simply had a stop-over, a connection, a train-through, or a cruise port visit. I've covered most of Canada and been to the U.S. too many times to count!
I first went traveling when I was 18 and have never stopped since ;-) Canada (home), United States, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador (lived a year), Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Peru Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, Barbados Iceland, England (UK), Netherlands, France, Monaco, Spain, Gibraltar, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Austria, Croatia, Slovenia, Russia (latest added to the list) Morocco, Egypt, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Ghana, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, United Arab Emirates, Iran (10 weeks traveling solo), India, Sri Lanka, Maldives China, Hong Kong, Macau, Brunei, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines (lived 7 months, returned once since), Australia (3 months) - several of these I have returned to multiple times and many trips were for extended stays of 4 to 9 weeks. Some were day-trips, such as Monaco, Gibraltar, Macau and Swaziland. Ireland, New Zealand, French Polynesia, Ecuador, Brazil, Chile and Argentina are still on my bucket list. I am also planning on returning to France, the UK, Portugal, Iceland and Turkey. Oh, and I love Hawaii - we're going back this coming winter!
No, I don't keep track. I had to sit down and count. We had this conversation with another group recently and decided in and out of an airport didn't count, nor did just a drive through. So ... N/S America – Canada, USA (home), Mexico, Panama, Colombia (lived 2 years), Ecuador, Peru, Brazil (lived 7 years), Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay (11) Pacific – Fiji, New Zealand, Australia (3) Europe – England, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Spain, Andorra, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Greece, & Turkey (22) Middle East - Israel, Jordan (2) That's 38.
19, Funny, my husband and I were counting last week but didn't include Vatican city and forgot Canada. And next trip is an Italy repeat. US Mexico Canada Belize Barbados Jamaica Costa Rica Macau (B4 part of China) Hong Kong China Ireland UK France Germany Italy Switzerland Austria Vatican City
Portugal
Wow. I'm like Zoe, except I can't get out of the UK. My brother keeps asking me when I'm going someplace else and I tell him I will when I'm though with the UK. But, I have also been to Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, Japan, The Philippines, France and The Republic of Ireland. Small potatoes compared to most of you.
19, not counting refueling stops or docking points.
58 with a rough count from the UN list. I also visited the former Czechoslovakia, East Germany, and Yugoslavia. Have you heard of the Travelers' Century Club? http://travelerscenturyclub.org/
They have their own list of 'countries' that includes remote states and provinces. They consider the Galapagos Islands, Alaska, Hawaii, Sicily, Hong Kong, Corsica and the like to be countries. To count as a visit, one only has to set foot. Not sure if you could double count visiting the former Yugoslavia by their rules and then returning to Montenegro, Slovenia and the rest.
For those having visited the old countries now broken into bits, I'd think that you could count the modern nations if you visited that part of the old country. IE: if you visited Prague in old Czechoslovakia, you can count Czech Republic now. I don't know why some people aren't counting cruise excursions??? If you've been in the country and seen something of a main city, why wouldn't you count it? Thats no different than what many people do traveling in Europe. I count Estonia even though I only spent a daytrip in Tallinn.
I have to write them down by visiting my mental map of the world, otherwise I loose track ... in the end there are 27 countries, mostly in Europe. Asia and Oceania/Australia are still wide open for me to discover. Very few of my travels were for business. Countries I've been to multiple times: Ireland (2x) Germany (to every single Land even though I only lived in Westphalia) France (about 6x in addition to the year I lived there) Spain (2x) Austria (3x) Netherlands (about 10x)
Canada (8 provinces) US (about a dozen States) Tanzania/Kenya (only 1x but stayed for 2 months) And then there were trips to England, Denmark, Belgium, Luxemburg, Czechoslovakia (in 1991 and I was indeed in both parts), Poland, Rumania, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Italy, Tunesia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Peru. My husband has almost caught up with me over the last few years as he had quite a bit of business travelling to do and always manages to add a day or more to actually see something beyond hotel and airport. And he actually did get to see Asia and Australia!
I've been to 15 but several mutiple times.
35, a mere drop in the bucket!! If I had enough time and money, maybe I could get around a bit. Mexico 13 times, italy twice, Germany three times and England twice (all counted as once). Most fascinating: Peru. Most terrifying: Guatemala six months after the war ended. Most breathtakeing: Costa Rica's cloud forest. Best French fries: Belgium! In 30 days we'll be in Malta--can't wait!!
Holland, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Luxembourg, Czech Republic, Mexico, Canada (Yukon Territory, Alberta, British Columbia, Quebec, Israel and 29 of the US States. My motto: Ready to travel anywhere anytime....just give me 24 hours.
And last but not least.....Israel.
Let's see... seven. i have been to Turkey, UK, Italy, New Zealand, Other parts of the USA, Canada, Mexico. I can add two more if you count lay-overs at airports :-), Germany and Australia
not so many as others but the countries I visited for all wonderful. Only missing a few states to be able to say I have been to all 50 states.
Hmmm, not good. USA (live here), Mexico, Canada...... a layover in Paris (didn't leave the airport, put hey) and Greece. However in better news: I am adding 4 more countries in Sept when I leave for my RS 14 day Best of Europe Tour!
Let's see. . . I'm one of those back in the USSR types UK (lived in Scotland as a child), numerous visits to London 1988 - Russia, Latvia, Lithuania. Hungary (lived there for a year and a half, 1993-1994). From there, travels to Poland, Austria, Germany, Slovakia, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, France, Greece, Romania. 1997 - back to Budapest for a summer internship; travels to Slovenia, Croatia (as far as first-time visits, I.e. added to my list). 1998 election monitor in Bosnia. 1999 - present. Lots of repeat trips to places for work and for pleasure. Worked in Spain for a couple of months in 2002; went to the Algarve in Portugal in 2003. Finally added the third Baltic, Estonia, to my list in 2009. Moved to France in 2004 and married an Italian in 2007, so those are most of the trips these days. Went to Helsinki for a girls' weekend in 2010, loved it. Visited a friend for a weekend in Luxembourg. Looks like 25 if I've remembered and counted correctly. Oh yes and Canada, but I've never been to Mexico. So many places still to go!!
Very Eurocentric and am still missing Ireland, most of Scandinavia, Scotland as an adult, Bulgaria, and Turkey.
We've been to 25 eastern/western european countries for various amounts of time (one week to up to seven months). We've been to 11 of these countries only 1 time but we've been to the other 14 countries numerous times. Our non European countries are Canada, most US states, Turkey and Isreal.
According to the TCC list, I've been to 18. Only 82 left to go! Actually, hitting 100 is a lifetime goal, but at the rate I'm going I won't make it because I keep going back to the same places. Netherlands 5X, Germany 5X, UK 4X, France 3X, Italy 2X, Belgium 2X, Austria 2X, Spain 2X, Morocco, Monaco, Vatican, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico (not a country, but it's on the list).
Mexico, Canada, Spain, England, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Austria, Hungary, Czech Rebublic, Italy. Such a small list compared to other posters.
I'm at 28, not counting countries I've flown over, only been in airports, or just crossed a border without stopping. Unless I have a good reason to go, I won't cross a border just to up my country count. I've been to Trier, Germany but not Luxembourg, as well as Tarifa, Spain but didn't catch a ferry to Tangiers.
I'm just a novice compared to some...lol...
UK...Netherlands...Germany...France....Switzerland...Italy...Czech Republic...Austria...Spain...Morocco...USA...Mexico...
Bulk of my international travels have been because of the Navy. However, here's the list of countries I've visited: Countries as tourists: Germany Mexico Countries I've visited while in the Navy (still got to play tourist when I got there): Japan - lived here Singapore Malaysia Hong Kong - before China took it over Philippians Thailand South Korea Saudi Arabia
Bahrain
A lot of my travel is budget/time based (since we generally don't take trips longer than a few days b/c of my husband's work schedule) so I haven't racked up that many countries, but I have returned to many that are convenient to me. I'm also a "returner" - when I find places I like, I often prefer to return to explore them in more depth. Before I moved to Germany, I did most of my travel around California. My list: US - lived in Germany - currently living in France - at least ten times, I live less than 90 minutes from the border Austria - 4x Mexico - 2x Spain - 1x Canada - 1x Hungary - 1x Switzerland - 1x
St. Martin/St. Maarten - 1x (I think technically it's part of France/Netherlands but I'm not gonna count that as the Netherlands) So not that many at all! But by 2013 I hope to have added Greece, Israel, and Turkey to that list.
I'm so jealous reading these lists! I've only been to a few compared to most people on here... Canada, England, France, Scotland, and of course the US(I have traveled to 41 out of the 50 states, so that counts right?) Next Sept. I will be traveling back to Scotland (I fell in love!) and Ireland :)
Let's see... 24. Here's a map with all of the flights I've taken since 1989. :) Everything from 2004 is 100% accurate and going back and before it's based on passport stamps. Canada Barbados Brazil Uruguay Argentina Iceland UK France Netherlands Italy Germany Switzerland Denmark Norway Sweden Finland Greece Turkey Russia UAE Oman Mongolia China
Japan A lot of this is up on my blog. :)
I've been to three countries Australia, US and UK....
39 and counting.
James: How far can you piss?
i live in the usa. canada england iceland belgium czech republic slovenia slovakia austria hungary croatia italy
ireland
USA Canada Mexico Belize Honduras Sweden Italy France Czech Republic Vatican?
Germany? (airplane layover) My friends and I argue over the last two. Thanks for the fun question! :)
56 and counting, but most of them have been work related. Only 5 or 6 for tourism only.
Not including the Land of La or the Magic Kingdom a mere 14. I need to get out more.
Only two so far, UK and France , coming up this fall , Italy and Switzerland .
Not alot, but what experiences !! Hope to see much more ! late in life,
Started counting a few years ago: 59 Japan South Korea China Taiwan Philippines Vietnam Thailand Myanmar Bahrain Turkey Algeria Greece Italy Austria Germany France Spain Belgium Luxembourg Netherlands Denmark Sweden England Iceland Canada United States Mexico Guatemala Belize El Salvador Honduras Nicaragua Costa Rica Panama Colombia Venezuela Guyana Suriname Brazil Uruguay Argentina Chile Bolivia Peru Ecuador Paraguay Wake Guam Aruba Martinique Bahamas Jamaica Dominican Republic Haiti Barbados Trinidad/Tobago Curacao Cayman Islands Turks and Caicos Islands Have lived in Continents 3 Countries 7 Cities 17
US States 8
I have kept track of the countries I have been to but there have been so many I just pin a country after I've been to it. So somewhere round 63 countries of the 200+ that are recognised. I count Palestine as a country :) I learned a lot by going to the Middle East especially Iran. I had no issues respecting the customs in the Middle Eastern countries and I liked the attire personally. I'm not Muslim but enjoyed the hijab since I wore the pretty types. Except in Iran I went black :) I would like to visit Australia, New Zealand and Japan someday but I'm trying to get through the 50 states first before heading back overseas. Maybe Canada as well~ In Western & Eastern Europe (Includes the former USSR) England, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Greece, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Luxemborg, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Serbia, Croatia, Denmark, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Romania, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Russia, The Ukraine, Macedonia, Bosnia~ The Middle East Isreal, Iran, Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt, Turkey~ Central & South America Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, Brasil, Argentina, Peru, Suriname~ North America & Territories Mexico and the USA (I'm a citizen :)~ I've been to 35 of the 50 states! Also Guam & Puerto Rico~ Africa Madagascar, South Africa, Zambia, Ghana, Mali Carribean Antigua, Trinidad and Tobago, Martinique, Bahamas, Montserrat Asian Countries
China, Malaysia, Taiwan
34 countries.
I think we need to help Ed complete his 100. Only 3 to go. I will assume he has already been to every country in Central and South America, Europe, and Asia. How about the Carribbean? Cuba? How about all the little tax-shelter island nations? Or island-hopping in the South Pacific? Tonga?
I'm beyond help. On the continents, I'm only missing North Korea and a few USSR chunks. The rest is Oceania.
