How long a stay in...

I've never been to Europe, but after buying several of Rick Steve's books it just seems their's lots to do. I know he offers his take on how long to stay per city but I would also like more suggestions for:

Note: I only have two weeks =-( and really less than that since the flight over takes a day in itself.

-Rhine River area
-Rotenburg
-Bavaria area
-Munich
-and Prague

On past vacations here in the states we are one of the types that seem to prefer a "faster" pace rather than slow so that boredom doesn't set in. I would like to hear your suggestions on how many days each "you" would recommend.

Thank you

It appears the flight would be a minimum of 12-1/2 hours from Houston - Frankfurt - Munich.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is 2-1/2 - 3-1/2 hours west of Munich depending on the train you choose. Nice scenery on the way.

The direct train (no changes) to Prague is 6 hrs. We took this train to Prague. It leaves the Munich Main HBF at 6:43 am and arrives in Prague at 12:45 pm.

If 2 or more are traveling together check into the Bayern (Barvarian) Ticket from Munich to Furth Im Wald. Then buy a ticket from Furth Im Wald to Prague. Must buy both of those tickets in Munich or the Barvarian are., i.e., but the 2nd ticket when you buy the Bayern Ticket.

Here is the link on the Bayern Ticket..scroll down approximately half way:

2 travel over and back.

1/2 day travel to and from Munich to Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
2 nights in Rothenburg

1 day travel to and from Munich to Prague.

2-3 nights in Prague.

That would leave you a day and half in Munich.

If you cut out Prague you may have time to see the Rhine Area.

I would choose Prague.

There is a Rothenburg near the Polish border and a Rothenburg ob der Tauber NW of Munich and west of Nurnberg. When buying train tickets be sure you tell them which one.

I believe you must have seat reservations for the direct train to Prague.

Hope this info helps.

Absolute minimum=two nights stay at each place for one full day in that place. I don't like to have to move every other day, so I think staying three nights is more ideal. Cities usually require a day for orientation, then a second day for a little more in-depth exploration; so for a more leisurely pace, stay three nights and if you find yourself with an extra day on your hands take a day-trip to some place.

Agree with Swan. Although, if you got to Rothenburg ob der Tauber around noon, it would give you 1/2 and the next which would be plenty of time IMO.

We got there around noon and stayed 3 nights. Actually could have stayed 2. The last day we did our laundry and walked around. We went on the City Tour and my daughter went on the Night Walkman's Tour.

Wow, alot of quick responces, I appreciate the input.

As of now, the rough itinerary is 2 nights in the Mosel/ Rhine Region. We then will more than likely drop in for lunch at Rothenburg on our way to the Bavaria Region for 2 nights. Upon leaving we'll go to Munich for a half day and head to Prague for 2 nights and on the last leg finish with Krakow/ Auschwitz (2 days) and Berlin possibly 1 or 2.

Ambitious? Probably, but I think a faster pace is more to our liking.

Comments/ Suggestions? Always open for your recommendations.

Thank you

Gary, you're hitting some of my favorite sights. My only comment is that the coolest thing in Rothenburg is the night watchmen's tour which takes place in the evening. I suppose if you really don't want to spend a night there you could leave after the tour and arrive in Bavaria late.

Gary,
you can do a lot in two weeks, but if you try to do too much it will all be a blur 6 months from now. Try to alternate busy days with lots of museums and sights and quieter days to just absorb the area you are staying in, the people and way of life, walk the streets, get lost, eat and nap etc. If I were you I would bag Prague and go back and do that the next time. Germany is wonderful and you will have a great time. Good luck!

I agree withJill the highlight of Rothenburg is the night watchmans tour.I would suggest getting to Rothenburg late in the day spend the night and leave the next morning.
