How good/comfortable are the backpack straps on RS convertable bag?

Hi, I'm about sold on the RS convertable bag, but I wanted to ask about the backpack straps. How about the optional shoulder strap?

How durable are they, and how well padded? I've replaced my children's school packs almost every year because the straps wear out, and I'm sure the back pack straps on the RS bag can't be replaced either. If/when they wear out, I would have to toss the bag.

And, can anyone tell me how well padded they are? I know some packs have thick, soft straps and others have straps like a dress belt...thin and hard. I would really appreciate hearing from people who've used theirs.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!

I used the RS bag on 2 trips. It is well made and durable. Then I went on a RS tour and one of the people on it had the MEI bag. It has better padding in the shoulders and, more importantly, on the waist. The padding on the shoulders is less important because the weight should be supported on your hips. You can go all day with 30 lbs on your hips, your back/neck/shoulders will kill you after 30 min with it all supported on your shoulders. When I returned, I bought the MEI bag. why all backpacking packs have a good waist belt.

Hi Mike, and thanks! To be honest I have looked at the MEI bag, or bags (I like their Executive Overnighter too). I hear INCREDIBLE things about them, but I have a concern. I have written to them 4 times, and called and left 3 voice messages over the past 3 weeks..and they won't respond! I'm sure they're busy, but the only note I've gotten from them said that a gentleman named Ahmed would get back with me. But despite having my phone number and e-address, I haven't heard from him in 13 days. Not only is that a problem with buying one, I must confess it makes me nervous as far as ever needing additional information or any sort of repair or warranty work!

I think the MEI line is made by a guy that bought the rights to make the bag from the original company. No question, you can't be in a big hurry to get the bag. 1 month delay is probably typical, mine took a little longer because I told him I didn't need it right away and I was ok with them taking time. When I called I got someone on the phone, seemed like a friendly person and was willing to answer any questions I had. MEI webpage is at http://www.meipacks.com/TravelPacks01.html

I couldn't wait for the MEI bag so went with Rick's bag and loved it!

First it fit so so so much stuff (a danger) and then when I thought it couldn't fit anymore I realized I hadn't even opened the expanding part. I has just the right amount of pockets too. It is also very light. I packed the most stuff but still had the lightest bag in the group.

It is not a technical pack. I wouldn't try packing tent and sleep bag and trek long distances but for casual travel of 1-2 miles between train and metro station, up and down stairs, it was fine. Well padded. (My pack weighed about 35#)

I do wish it had straps to tighten the shoulder straps closer to the body but that was my only complaint and a minor one.

It takes MEI awhile to get back to you. I waited 2 weeks for an answer to an email and they said they would get back to me on another matter but they never dit.

If you do decide to by the RS bag, do it this week. He has a special going at 20% off--this week only.

If you want a very comfortable shoulder strap, I suggest Eagle Creek's top of the line strap. Very thick pad.

I was afraid of that. It is a real shame, because the MEI gear draws RAVE reviews. I am not sure how well or long a company can stay in business if they are that non-responsive.

Thanks, Frank, I really appreciate the tip on the shoulder strap! It looks really nice!

Do you have any thoughts or opinions on the backpack straps? Unlike the single shoulder strap, I wouldn't be able to change them. And once they were worn out, or if they aren't padded enough for use, I would be stuck.

The straps are, to be honest, my only hesitation about the bag.

WHile the back pack straps are incluided and decent - they are not quite as advanced as say real-back=packing straps found on Northface or similar serious outdoor gear. Its fine for meoving from city ot city or hotel - but I also made sure I ordered the shoulder strap since I had my good day pack - I found the over the shoulder worked real well carrying both (if not too heavy!) Packing light is key regardless - and can take a while to get just right! But if you get the RS bag - get the extra 10$ shoulder strap too!
