Once we get to Europe we will activate our e-sims that we have purchased. That will then give us a French phone number I believe?
I see many using Whatsapp to be contacted. I currently have my normal cellphone number in there, so do I just continue to give accommodations and services (e.g. taxi shuttles that I have booked) that number and it will go through on Whatsapp?
I know when I switched out my sim card in India, Whatsapp worked with my home phone number as per normal. I was worried too, but it was easier than expected. It worked for my existing contacts and I country add ons.
And you want to double check your esim. Some are only data plans. Review what you bought and keep track of how long it is valid for. The Technology forum has valuable posts on esims and various plans and providers.
When you give out your number, make sure you tell whoever you are giving it to that it is your WhatsApp number. Even though it's the same number, they must call you through the app (and vice versa), otherwise they (or you) will be charged for an overseas call.

I always make a point to give both numbers and indicate that the US number is WhatsApp and my Spanish number is voice only (my SIM is data and voice, but no SMS). No one has ever used anything other than the WZP.
