I'm trying to finish up plans for our trip! Suggestions for hotels in Zermatt under $250/night for a double would be greatly appreciated. We will arrive by train and would like to be not too far from the station but not someplace noisy. A beautiful view out the window would be a plus! Thanks!
Hi, Chris
I hope its for next year...
We stayed in Zermatt a couple of years ago at the Best Western Alpenresort. It is under $250 and we had a room with a view of the Matterhorn, I don't remember if I paid extra. They have a cart that will take luggage to and from the station. It's not far but cobblestones. Two things about Best Western - 1. They are not usually chain-like outside the States, 2. You can book well in advance and they have liberal cancellation terms.

I assume you know about parking in the garage and taking the train. It can be very confusing to understand which train is leaving...
We've driven a car on previous trips to Europe so I don't know about it being difficult to tell which train is leaving. Please enlighten me! My daughter traveled all over Europe on a rail pass and never had any problems. But then she was young and I, alas, am old!
Chris:
We have stayed at the Hotel Romantica on a couple of trips to Zermatt. It is on a side street and very quiet, many rooms offer a nice view. The cost is right in line with what your are looking for, and when we have stayed, they have had a cart with driver to help you to and from the train station.
Check out pictures and prices at the link below.

By the way, what does the car discussion have to do with your question if you are traveling by train? Did I miss something?
We stayed in the Weisshorn Hotel in May 2006. When the clouds parted we had a beautiful view of the Matterhorn from our room! I don't recall the price then, but their website (http://www.hotelweisshorn.ch/) says 130 Fr. right now for a double (about US$120) breakfast and taxes included. I recall having to climb some stairs, but it wasn't a problem. Happy travels.
I was replying to Daniel's comment about the car in the garage, but not sure what he meant. I sent him a message so hope he'll reply, Thanks for your suggestion. I usually get hotels booked far in advance but life has been so hectic I haven't had the time, but I must get it done soon.
Hi, Sorry if I was confusing. There are no cars allowed in Zermatt proper. You park in a huge underground garage and take a train several miles to the town. That said, there are still several trains and we saw people jumping in and out trying to figure out which one was going to leave.
PS: I meant when leaving town in the morning...
Galen,
Checked the Best Western and it looked very nice, but unfortunately it was booked for our date. Thanks for the recommendation.
Chris,
check out the accommodations listings on zermatt.ch. put in your dates and it will show all hotels with availability at that time,z at all price levels. most places 3 stars or better will have at least some rooms with a Matterhorn view, priced somewhat higher than rooms with no view. it is all worth it. most places will pick you up when you arrive, for a small fee.
as for quiet, since the only traffic in Zermatt is commercial (electro buses and small truck), the main concern is nearby construction.
Once you identify hotels with availability on zermatt.ch, check the websites and then email directly to ask about prices and if there is nearby construction.
Lola,
Thanks for the great suggestion. I've booked Zurich, Lucerne, and Lauterbrunnen, but still need to decide on hotels inZermatt and Montreux or Vevey.
For Montreux/Vevey, try Riviera Lodge if looking for best price. It is listed as a hostel, but they have private rooms too.
Once you get a list of hotels in Zermatt with availability, ask here about the 3 or 4 that look most attractive to you, or send me a private message. I'll try to locate them on my Zermatt map in relation to the river and distance from the train station to help you choose.
I can highly recommend Hotel Daniela in Zermatt. It should fit your budget and you will have an excellent view of the Matterhorn. We were there in the off season--third week in May and it was a bit quiet but that suited us just fine. The Daniela has a "sister" hotel, the Julen and it has a pool which Daniela guests are free to use--they provide robes for your walk a short way over to the Hotel Julen pool. Breakfast at the hotel was one of the best we have had in Europe--really excellent. They will pick you up with a shuttle at the train station.
I concur with the last writer. Hotel Daniela was an excellent choice- quiet with a delicious breakfast . My daughter and I had a two level room with a gorgeous view of the Matterhorn. It was enormous and nicely decorated. Perfect location.
