Hotels in the Opera area

This is my first visit to Paris. I had a hard time finding a room in the Rue Cler area which was my first choice. I finally, found a room in the Opera area a 5 min. walk from the Louvre. Has anyone stayed in that area. Is it safe and close to metro? The hotel is Lautrec Opera Hotel. Has anyone stayed there?? Appreciate any input.

I haven't stayed at the hotel, but I am very familiar with the location, and yes, it is safe. I mean, Paris is a big city, so don't do anything silly - but yes, it is very safe. Lots of people around even pretty late at night, which is a good thing. And yes, you will be steps from the Richelieu-Druout stop on the metro. I remember this stop as super clean - not all stops are. You are also very close to the Opera stop. And very close walking distance to les Galeries Lafayette! Fab location.

If this is your first visit to Paris I hope you have gotten a copy of RS Paris Guide Book. It has lots of information for any travelers visiting that great city that we have used every time we visit there. If you do not have that guide book, you can order a copy elsewhere on this web site (see "books").
We also like the Rue Cler area although many folks who post here do not. Enjoy Paris.

We have stayed in that area- seemed extremely safe, much more chic and central than Rue Cler. Easy walk to many tourist high spots- Rue Rivoli, Place d Concord, madeleine, Tuileries gardens, louvre, Champs elysee etc etc etc. Also close to some great department stores and little boutiques. Some nice restaurants very nice area in my opinion

You've chosen wisely. Printemps and Lafayette are there-fabulous window shopping! I stayed about a 1/2 mile north by Gare St. Lazare-MUCH more bustling and exciting than Rue Cler. Have fun!
