Hotels in Europe

Ok, I am looking at all my budget student travel books and they are a bit confusing about hotels. When you book a hotel room (anywhere in europe, western europe, to be specific) is the price that they state in a travel book just for ONE person, or is it for the room? Will my husband and I need to pay that price for each of us, or is it just a flat price? I am so confused! If it is a flat price, it would definitely be more affordable to just get budget hotel rooms instead of using hostels, right??

You can assume the quoted rate is per room and not per person, unless it's a hostel or says "per person." Usually in Europe, in most countries, a typical quote will say something like: single €50, double €75, etc--that means a room for one person is €50, a room for two people is €75, etc. Hostels normally charge per person and their rate quotes will normally make that clear.

Just mail the hotel directly or better yet, just call them. They will tell you the cost better than any guide book!

If you are contacting hotels ahead of time, also ask if they give a discount for cash. The worst they can say is no. Often they will have a discount if you ask for it (some of them quote a discount without asking while others will say they only take cash).

Depending on where you are going, hotels will either include some basic breakfast or quote a charge for breakfast (sometimes other meals too). I like to know the options so I can decide whether the charge is worth it or whether I'd rather just go to a local bakery for some pastries. If you are up late, you may not want to get up to take advantage of the food anyway.

I'm not one for roughing it, but I am a budget person. I use hotwire.com for many of my hotels and I've never been disappointed when I pick a 3 star or higher place. In my trip to London in June I am getting the Sheraton for 89 dollars (or $110 a night inclu tax).

In Munich I found a great hotel for 79 euros at www.hrs.de. I compared the hotels to the reviews at tripadvisor.com and the hotel was very nice and came with breakfast.

There's ways to get affordable rooms... but it will take research, and not to give up.
