Hotels in Barcelona, Madrid with kids

Hi we are traveling to Barcelona and Madrid in Feb and were wondering if there were any cheap hotels that anyone knew of. Also any ideas on what to do in both cities with kids?

How old are the kids?

In Barcelona, there's an amusement park below Tibidabo. There are street performers on the Rambla that are amusing and entertaining. There's Parc Guell, where you can find and take pictures with the big mosaic lizard. Also, one can take hour-long catamaran rides on the Mediterranean, although perhaps in February that won't be an option or any fun!

I stayed in an apartment across the street from the university. The website is www.lovingbarcelona.com. We stayed for 5 days and the apartment was just wonderful. We stepped out and the metro was right there and across the street was the university square. We had a view of the university clock tower. It was a short walk to the Las Ramblas. My sons(11,13,15) appreciated the Sagrada Familia (we saw everything that was Gaudi), the Sardana dancers, a day trip to Barcelona Stadium (the tour was fun, my boys play soccer), Las Ramblas, chocolate and churros,Olympic Village and playing at the beach nearby. The apartment was air conditioned, with a kitchen(I actually cooked to keep costs down~only breakfast and made lunches to go) and a washer was in the apartment! We would go again in a heartbeat. My family had an enjoyable time. The people were very friendly, helpful and willing to speak English before you can ask. Good luck!
