I'm sure that Jo will chime in here about staying in Frankfurt.

Let me say that hotels right around the Frankfurt airport, with shuttle service, will probably be pricey.

In the past, I have stayed at Hotel Königshof, in Mainz. It is right across the Bahnhofvorplatz from the main station in Mainz, and a quick S-Bahn trip into FRA. Their prices are reasonable, €87-€93 for a triple.

There is also a Best Western Hotel in Rüsselsheim. I'm not sure if they have a shuttle, but they are only a few blocks from the S-Bahn into FRA.

The city of Frankfurt is only 11-15 minutes away from the airport, so there is really no need to stay next to the airport. An S-bahn group ticket is 14.30 euro, and will cover your family of 3, all day and evening coming in from the airport and also if you want to ride around on the buses, trams, U-bahns and S-bahns in the city.

When are you coming and what is your budget?

For a family of 3, I think I would look at the Jugendherberge, which is located along the river, as they have family rooms and the cost is good.

Or look at the Ibis on the Friedensbruche. This is about a 5 min. or so walk from the Main train station and is also located along the river. Very pretty view with a park out in front. They have triple rooms.

The Main Fest is going on the 1st of August, so that might be fun for your family to visit. It is right downtown by the Römer.

If you want to spend some late-afternoon and evening time strolling around a pleasant city, I would do as Lee suggests and stay in Mainz (about 20-25 min by S-Bahn to FRA), where there's a concentration of old-town buildings, outdoor cafes, bars and shops in a pedestrians-only zone near the Dom (cathedral, a fine Romanesque structure in the center of town.)

There's also an Ibis hotel just across from a secondary Mainz train station; it's a bit closer to the area mentioned above and prices start at about 60 Euros. They have doubles with an additional child's bed upon request.

We stayed at the Intercity Hotel at Frankfurt Airport. We turned our rental car in the night before, woke up and had a wonderful breakfast buffet, then rode the hotel shuttle to the airport. Easy and convenient.
