My husband and I will be in Madrid for three days after visiting our daughter in Granada. Looking for hotel suggestions, not super expensive but not too budget either. Would like to be within walking distance of some of the sights. We enjoy meandering through neighborhoods and interesting parts of a city.
We are big fans of Hotel Europa, 3 star, right at Puerto del Sol. Doesn't get more central than that.
Patti, I second the Hotel Europa. We were there for 4 days in early Novembe,r and it was perfect. Be sure you get the Rick Steves' Spain Book for restaurants, walking tours etc. We took 2 walking tours that he has in his book. Reasonable and informative. Either Segovia or Toledo would be good day trips. Have a good trip.
Ditto Hotel Europa. I stayed here with a RS tour and then on my own at the end. The staff was very helpful, free internet in lobby, clean well apportioned rooms. Great location. http://www.hoteleuropa.eu/
Another vote for the Europa. I stayed there in October and loved it: perfect location, helpful staff, and a great value. My interior room didn't have the fun view of the square, but it was extremely quiet, and it was cheaper.
Nothing against the Europa, but the Hostal Gonzalo is much less expensive, and nearer to the Prado and the Reina Sofia Museums. Super clean, no breakfast, cash only, and the proprietor was really helpful. Easy walk to Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, and the Royal Palace, or the Atocha station.
