While technically not a Europe question, this video shows how easy it is to get into some hotel rooms. (And it was made in Europe.)

Interesting!! Thanks, Frank. I guess I know what to do with a towel now :).
The only problem with using the towel is that whoever comes in to clean the room will put the towel back in the bathroom.
Frank II - That was my first thought when I saw the solution, but I will give it a try on my next trip.
Thanks Frank. That was scarily illuminating! I've always believed that hotel room thefts are usually inside jobs, so there's very little one can do about it.
A great tip for room safety at night, is to pack a rubber door stopper and put this under the door. A tip from my solo well travelled daughter. simple really!
Interesting video...but I found that all the rooms I stayed in had deadbolts separate from the door latch. Once the deadbolt was engaged, the little trick this video shows is going to get you nowhere, as it clearly shows that there was no deadbolt engaged....
Absolutely true..except in most cases, you can only use the deadbolt when you're "in" the room.
The video shows what can happen when you are "out."
I'm more concerned with locking people out of my room when I am in it. If one doesn't travel with valuables one doesn't have to worry about lost luggage or theft. My room would be a total disappointment to a thief. I used to travel with a door wedge, but never ran across a door with which it worked as the door has to be of a certain height from the floor/carpet. I have regressed to my early 20's system of putting something in front of the door or window that will make a lot of noise if someone starts to open it. Ha! But isn't the way we travel, often by the seat of our pants, freeing sometimes? I've digressed. Sorry.
hi wray, you're not alone, I used to put a small item of furniture behind the hotel room door at night too! I think it was more for peace of mind rather than any serious conviction that it would deter potential 'invaders'.
