Is it safe to use a hotel room safe in Europe for your valuables?
Robert, Although thefts from Hotel room Safes probably don't occur too often, I prefer not to use them. I always keep my Passport and credit cards with me in a Money Belt, and my DSLR is also with me. I always lock my Netbook in my luggage when away from the room, and so far haven't had any problems. I've seen a few reports that Hotel Safes are fairly easy to compromise. You may find it interesting to have a look at This Video for one example. In my experience, Hotel room Safes in European Hotels are usually provided "free" with the cost of the room. Some of the Hotels I've used in North America sometimes charge a small fee for them. Cheers!
Generally yes. Instances of theft from a room safe are really rare. Your biggest risk is probably leaving something behind in it when you check out.
Thanks, Brad. Is there usually a charge or surcharge for using hotel safes?
