My husband and I are planning a trip to Europe in May 2011 and want to know how early we should start making hotel reservations, especially if we decide to visit the smaller towns such as Gimmelwald and Hallstatt.
It is pretty unique to everyone, but if it were me.... If I were going to a major city for a major event or summer holiday(ex: Munich for Oktoberfest) I would make reservations one year in advance. Other major cities during non-major events/holiday weekends...I would do 6 months. Other destinations like Hallstatt or Gimmewald....3-6 months. I am a planner however. I don't want to research and find the perfect hotel in the perfect location for the perfect $$$ only to find out it is booked solid. That's me!
I am also going to Hallstatt next May, and I've already made my reservations, but I like to get things done early, especially this time, since I found the perfect room at the perfect price, and nothing else would do. But you do have plenty of time.
We were just in Hallstatt this last May and were easily able to find a great place to stay when we arrived in town. We went to the tourist office in the middle of town and asked the extremely helpful woman what was available. She steered us to a great apartment, right on the lake that was less than we paid for any other room our entire trip. We were only planning to stay one night, but loved the spot so much that we stayed for three nights instead. Hallstatt was the unexpected highlight of our trip.
