This should be an easy question - My wife and I are planning a combination escorted and free lance trip to Europe in June of next year. The Escorted trip is all taken care of but we are planning a side trip to Paris and London. How much in advance would you recommend that we make hotel reservations for Paris and London for 2010? Expidea wants the full stay paid for in advance - seems sort of unreasonable to lay all that money out 10 months in advance.

We usually deal directly with the hotels, and try to make refundable deposits or pre-pays. In the past we have made reservations up to 6 months in advance and paid as much as 3 months in advance. We tend to use 3,4,or 5 star hotels. Sometimes we have waited as late as 2 months before makeing our decisions, but that is not usual for us. June is the high tourist season, so making them early is not unreasonable.

John - Steve hit it exactly right - give your credit card to hold the room and any good Hotel accepts that. No need to pay up front.
