I have a great budget hotel hidden gem in Paris,, or should I say,, I HAD it,, while looking up rates for this year noticed a BIG jump in prices from last year.. drats drats drats,, and why did this happen. Oh ,, I know why, they renovated it,, double drats..Now I will have to hunt around for another gentlely aged madam for my budget pick in great location. So my apoligizes to any that I have referred to this hotel as a great cheap sleep, its still a great sleep, just no longer as cheap( but still hovering just under 100 euros) I somewhat blame myself,, once you find a hidden gem you have to shut your mouth about it,, otherwise it starts to become popular, and busy, and then they have the money to fix themselves up , then of course they are justified in raising the rates.. So, there, Hotel Saint Pierre( by the Sorbonne) is no longer the cheapest a/c sleep around,, its still a good pick,, just no longer on my cheap cheap list..
Yeah, my fave was the Sevigne in the Marais. Super location, decent 2-star. It is currently closed for 6 months for renovations - and the bathrooms were quite new and shiny before. I dread to see what the new price will be - it was around €68 for a single, €10-15 more for a double. And the one I stayed at 2 years ago in Venice - a real charmer - raised their rates by some 40-50%.
I hear that! In 2007 I found a very nice hotel in Amsterdam with rooms for 2 people for about 70 euros per night. At that time they were renovating it and part of it was closed to guests. I stayed there in 2008 also. In 2010 I wanted to book a room for 2 nights and found that they raised their prices to 90 euros per night for a double room, and they required a 3-night stay minimum. Sadly, I didn't book a room there.
On the other hand, our dollar, Canadian and US, has strengthened against the Euro so that should help a little.
