Hotel in Paris for "larger" Americans

My father is a quite large American...300lbs? .... and is going to Paris. I stayed at Hotel de Lutece and my mom wants to take him there but I'm very afraid it is too small. Any ideas of kinda quaint but larger rooms? Is a chain hotel the best choice? Money is not a major object, but they are practical. Thanks for ideas

You said chain hotel but also said kinda quaint: chain hotels are not going to be quaint. American style/American brand name chain hotels sometimes/often will have larger rooms. Because you're concerned about his size, a heads up that some of the European budget chain hotels have unexpectedly small (to an American) shower stalls including shower stall doors--suggest you avoid the budget chains and try to get a look at a room interior via a webpage before booking.

Angela,, as Kent said,, quaint sort of means small and cute,, .. so lets skip that and find them a room in a nice area,, and that your parents will be comfortable in..
And, yes, watch out for small shower stalls, I've been in ones that I couldn't bend over to pick up soap in,, and I am a very average sized woman..

I did stay in a room that had a certain amount of character( which we can sub in for quaint, LOL ) , and the room itself was not too small, plus it had a large tub/ shower situation,, plus,, best of all, amazing views of the Louvre, Tuileries Gardens , and in the distance the Eiffel Tower..
Look up the Hotel Brighton on Rue Du Rivoli,, be sure to get a " Tuillerie View" room as they are bigger and the view will really make the trip.

Other then that all the hotels I have stayed in seemed relatively small, even for me. I would consider a chain hotel for your dad, his comfort is important,, he really would be unhappy in some places. There is a Hilton near the ET that some people like,, its not my fave area, but many like it.

good luck with research and hope your parents have fun.

I suggest you look at some of the Best Westerns in Paris. People here will jump at the idea of staying in a chain, but the Best Westerns in Paris are not like the ones here. There, they utilize the reservation system and have to live up to BW standards. But most are smaller hotels (number of rooms) that are used to Americans. And let's face it, we're getting bigger.

Plus, you can see photos of the hotels on the BW website. I've staying in a couple and they were very French.

Hotel d'Aubusson on Rue Dalphine has rooms that are 'generous' in size. Especially their Lux ones. You might call and ask them. They have no problem with english. I have found them to be very helpful.

Try Hotel de l'Arcade in the 8th Arr. We stayed there last November. The duplex rooms are quite spacious, having a downstairs "sitting area" with the upstairs as a sleeping loft (with a queen-size bed). It may not be a "name" hotel, but it was quiet, close to transport and in a nice neighborhood.

We stayed at Hotel Royal at 212 Raspail Blvd, near the intersection of Raspail and Montparnasse, in the 14th. It seems to sometimes go by either Hotel Royal Luxembourg, or H R Montparnasse. Our rooms were fine. They had been upgraded from what was booked so I don't know what they would have been. They responded nicely in English to emails. One of our rooms had a shower stall, and the other a bathtub with shower. Small but usable elevator. If noise is a concern, book a room in back. Our front rooms were noisy, but only when the windows were open. Metro, bus and taxis nearby, LOTS of cafes, busy blvds for some excitement, and quiet streets to wonder.

I was also going to suggest the Best Western Nouvel Orleans. We stayed there in '07 and my husband was a little over 300lbs at that time. The shower is small but he fit. It is in an old building and is not like an american style hotel at all. There is a metro stop RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET so easy to get places. There is a small lift in the hotel but it's hard to fit more than one person in it at a time. There are also lots of shops and restaurants around that area. We liked it so much that we are staying there again next summer. The staff is pretty nice as well.

Oh yes, I had forgotten about the hotel Karen suggested the Hotel Royal. We stayed there for the last two days of a Rick Steves Family Tour( see not all his tours stay on Rue Cler, LOL ) and the rooms were definately what I would consider to be " American sized" We had a front room and noticed no noise,, but then we kept the windows shut and just used the air conditioner.

Don't know how long you will be there, but perhaps an large apartment rental may offer more breathing space ?

If money is no major object, then I agree with Bill, and would consider a nice apartment, unless your folks want the true hotel amenities. My husband and I always choose a more private residence over a hotel when we travel (houses in Maui, apartment in Europe) for the privacy, space, and flexibility. Try Paris Perfect for some of the nicest apartments in the 7th (www.parisperfect.com).
