we are staying in barcelona for one night after our cruise and need a hotel rec'dn. please let me know what you think , we will have lot's of luggage and need to think about transportation from port to hotel and then to airport. flight is really early next day fyi.... jane

If you have to leave very early the next day, maybe you'd be better to stay out by the airport. You could try booking.com., they usually offer a seperate list for hotels near airports.

I like using booking.com. You can narrow down your search to hotels that fit 4 and offer airport transportation.

A great location right on Las Ramblas and the price is fair. Have a look at their website and definitely enjoy one of Europe's most fascinating cities. At the bottom of Las Ramblas by the old port you can get on an open air bus which will show you the amazing sights of Barcelona, allowing you to get off and back on as often as you like.
As far as staying at the airport - what a shame that would be to miss a truly incredible city!!! Please don't do that!! The hotel will get a cab as early as you like and in 20 minutes you'll be at the Airport.
