this is a hypothetical question. if i book a hotel on the internet from a hotel booking service and the hotel does not honour the rate given what is my recource?

None -- however, my experience with a booking service is that you receive a confirmation from the hotel.

I always book directly with hotel using their own website, I have done this in Paris at least 6 or 7 times , at different hotels, and never had a problem. I always print out email confirmation of reservation and bring it with me.
I am pretty sure using a booking agency does not guarantee you any more safety ( re booking being screwed up) ,, but often results in a more expensive room. Always check websites yourself first.
Exceptions may be the large chain hotels, I don't stay at them though.
I do tend to email a reconfirmation a few weeks before I go .. I book the hotels up to 6 months in advance usaully so I like to be sure.

I have booked 2 separate trips to europe using hotels.com. I never had any problems. The only time anything happened was when I booked a room in Barcelona last April, they had me down as two rooms. I pulled out confirmation and they immediately took off the other room off my card. Good luck. Kim
