hot weather travel

lots of the info. about packing discusses staying warm in the off season... what about travel in hot summer weather?... some of the quick dry fabrics do not breathe at all and would be uncomfortable.. and there is some discussion of only Americans wearing shorts.. skirts are great for women in the heat.. what suggestions for staying cool do you have? thank you in advance

Look for the hi-tec fabrics. At least half of the golf wear for men and women are made with non-cotton or blend, fast drying fabrics in a tropical weight. If you look really hard you can find non-golf attire in the same fabrics, but they aren't as common.

We go to Europe every summer (warm to hot) and take quick drying, wrinkle resistant clothes that we can wash out in the room every few nights. We mostly have ExOfficio and Lands Ends with a few REIs. All of our travel clothes breaths and my wife and I both wear shorts when it is hot and we are outside. We have had no problems with this. I get lots of practice trying things here in Hawaii.
Good luck and happy travels.

Karen, as well as the usual broadbrimmed hat, water bottle, and breathable fabrics, do as the Italians do and have a siesta during the heat of the day. Charge your camera batteries as well as your own. I'm a skirt wearer in preference also. A few nice tops and you are ready to go.

Just posted this in another thread too - one thing we take is a spray bottle that puts out a fine mist. Definitely helps to keep cool especially when walking/hiking. It also lets you make friends with the local kids (some times)

I used quick dry tops last summer and they were very breathable and comfortbale. Exficco is the best brand in my opinion, but expensive.
Also at Macy's you can find clothes made of microfiber which feel nice on the skin and are quick dry as well.

I've been doing lots of researching, looking and buying clothes for my trip this summer. I wanted the same type of items--wicking, quick drying and wrinkle resistant. Most of the new "travel/hiking" do all that. I've bought nearly all of mine on www.sierratradingpost.com, www.campmor.com, www.rei.com, and www.travelsmith.com

It's started getting hot and humid this week, so I've been giving them all a test run and they are so much cooler and more comfortable than the cotton I've always worn. I think I've found my new summer clothes for home. It dawned on me that if they are going to be more comfortable in Italy, they would be more comfortable in Texas!
