Hostels & Luggage

Hi all. I'll be staying in hostels over my free weekends while studying abroad. I plan on bringing a backpack or tote. I will be sure to ask the hostel before staying if there's a way to lock my luggage in the room before leaving it. I have a question about the last day. Let's say I have a flight leaving at 7pm, but check-out is at noon. Do most hostels have a system where they will hold your backpack/tote for you so that you can still explore on your last day before heading to the airport? Thanks!

Stephanie, If you're staying in Dorm rooms, it probably won't be possible to "lock your luggage" in your room as you'll be sharing the room with others. Most Hostels provide Lockers, but in most cases it's necessary to provide your own Padlock. I would highly recommend using a good quality Padlock and NOT a cheap TSA Lock. A Lock of small-to-medium size is best (nothing too large). For your last day, the Hostel should be able to provide storage for your bags. Check with them when you arrive. Happy travels!

Stephanie, Hostels are infamous for petty theft. Every hostel I've been to offers a decent size locker. Bring a good gym-type lock and keep everything locked up anytime you aren't personally supervising your stuff (including a trip to the bathroom). If it's a round-the-clock place, you can keep your bag locked up in your room during the day, keep everything you aren't carrying with you locked up in the locker. Some Hostels have lock-out times. If you're staying at one of those, take your bag with you unless you can lock it in an individual locker. Take your bag to the train or bus station and lock it up there until it's time to head back to the hostel. For that last day, the same rules apply. If they'll give you an individual locker to use, great - otherwise, take it to the bus or train station to keep it secure. I wouldn't leave my bag in any area that's loosely supervised.

I can't speak for all the European hostels, but in my experience they either have a luggage room for free or for a nominal cost or they may have large lockers you can rent (like The Clink in London). If you come to california, our guests at USA Hostels get free luggage storage in a secure room on day of check out.
