Any tips on getting a private for under $60 cdn for one.In Paris,Prague,Budapest,Istanbul,Athens,I will be near to Delphi,Mykonos,Olympia, and Rome as well). Also any tips about saving money.I am purchasing a rail pass for most of the trip and will travel by ferry etc.
Racchel,, first tip, convert your budget to euros,, its easier to think that way ,and then those with different currencies don't have to convert your budget (can $) . Often a budget hotel will work out cheaper for two then a hostel,, but not always. Your budget is very tight,, when is trip, obviously prices are seasonal.
Also, Athens is not near to either to Rome or Mykonos,, so I will assume you haven't nailed down a firm itinerary yet. Rail passes are not always best deal( they used to be way better).. so first, come up with an itinerary, then price out point to point tickets,, before you invest in a railpass. Also, forget the ferry from Brindsi to Athens,, its probaly cheaper and easier to fly from Rome to Athens on a low cost carrier,, IF you book well in advance. Also Mykonos if fun, but look at Naxos..cheaper and just as fun. Check out Thorntree, its Lonely Planets forum, and will have more budget travellers advice and ideas on it.. also hostellingworld.com You have lots of homework to do,, but its fun ..
The website is actually Hostelworld.com and it's a good one for reviews. I believe what you are asking is why do most hostels charge a 2 person rate for a private room in a hostel when it's just going to be for 1 person. The answer would probably be because you want a private room which is always going to cost more than a shared. The more bodies they can cram into a room, the cheaper you'll pay to sleep. If privacy is the most important thing for you in lodging but you are on a tight budget, maybe check into other options like a room through Airbnb.com, see whether you can find a really low advance web only deal (usually prepaid w/ no refunds) for a single room at a larger chain hotel (yes, that goes against the Rickniks Travel Commandment "Thou Shalt Not Stay at a Large Hotel, but those are places that are willing to cut a good deal to attract business rather than be stuck with empty rooms). Try convents & monastery stays (but beware if they have set curfews), or check with the local universities as some may rent dorm rooms to tourists during the summer. I stayed in a lot of university housing and found it better than many hostels as I was able to get a private room, often with my own bathroom, and some extra perks like free WiFi, laundry facilities and breakfast.
Rachel, I'm assuming that you're trying to book a private room? Hostels typically charge "per bed" for Dorm rooms, but in the case of private rooms there are usually two single beds. If the room is occupied by one person, they charge for two beds. Are you travelling solo? If you want to get the best possible rates, you might consider staying in Dorm rooms. Many these days provide ensuite facilities in each room, and four-bed Dorms aren't usually too bad. You might also consider staying in budget Hotels in some locations, as the prices might not be too different than a private room in a Hostel. Have a look at This Website for information on Hostels in many of the places you'll be visiting. I've found their facilities to be somewhat consistent from one location to the next. You'll get cheaper rates and preferred booking if you have a Membership. If this is your first trip to Europe, I'd highly recommend reading Europe Through The Back Door, as it provides a lot of great information on "how" to travel in Europe. Happy travels!
