Can you define "best"? Also, no "n" at the end of Amsterdam ... unless it was a joke.

"in great location near train stations", In Europe, sometimes that's an oxymoron.

As far as Interlaken, Gimmelwald, Wengen - those are all very close to each other and you only need to choose 1 destination...not 3.

Gimmelwald has the "Mountain Hostel", but just a short gondola ride up the mountain will bring you to Muerren where you could stay at the Chalet Fontana. Not much more expensive than a hostel and includes a good breakfast. www.chaletfontana.ch

You might want to check out the "Let's Go" or "Lonely Planet" guides to Europe as they are more geared to what you want. Also the Thorn Tree Forum at the Lonely Planet website.

Let's go is definitely the best college age guide. It's written by college students, for college students, and is completely updated and rewritten every year. I've found it's information to be much more accurate than Lonely Planet's General Europe book. (ie better updated phone numbers, opening hours, etc). In Amsterdam, the hostels in the Park are pretty cool (can't think of the name), they are structured, but a hip, young crowd goes there, and it's close enough to everything. Paris - you can actually get a nice hotel for the same price as a hostel. Hope that somewhat helps! Grab the Let's Go Western Europe book! :)

It's about 20 Euro more than you might want to spend, but check out the Hemp Hotel in Amsterdam. Other poster is correct, in Paris you can often find a good deal on budget hotels - try the Accor Hotels website (Ibis, Etap, Formule 1) to see what kind of rates they might have for whatever month you are traveling.

And if you are going away during the summer months, look into university housing in some of the bigger cities you'll be visiting. Lots of universities in Europe offer up single and double rooms (many with private bathrooms) to tourists for very low prices and they include good amenities (laundry facilities, internet access, free breakfast). And the location is typically very central and near the places you'll want to be.

Read reviews of the hostels on bugeurope.com or hostelworld.com before you book. In addition to Let's Go guidebooks, Frommer's teamed up with MTV to create travel guides geared towards students/young adults.

fred,

A few suggestions for you to consider....

ROME - You'd probably like Alessandro Palace - it's in a good location, about seven minute walk from Termini, they have a BAR, and it's modern, clean and well run. A basic breakfast is included, and there are Internet facilities on the premises. There's also an Alessandro Downtown, without the Bar.

SIENA - no information on Hostels. You might consider a B&B or budget Hotel. Check the Guidebook for listings.

Interlaken - have a look at Balmer's Herberge. It's one of the most popular.

Gimmelwald - of course there's only one choice, the famous Mountain Hostel. It's only about a one minute walk from the Cable Car station. Be sure to offer some help if they need help hauling wood for the Hot Tub or whatever. If the Hostel is booked, you could always consider Esther's Guesthouse which is in the same area.

Wegen - do you mean Wengen, Switzerland???

Paris - I usually stay in budget Hotels in Paris. You might check www.hihostels.com/dba/hostels-Paris-list.php?lang=E&city=FR%7C0048 for details.

Amsterdam - check www.hihostels.com/dba/Hostels-Amsterdam-list.php?lang=E&city=NL%7C0001 or www.flyingpig.nl/ for information.

You could also check www.hostelworld.com for listings in various cities.

Good luck and happy travels!
