hostels - cheaper to book before or when I arrive?

I'm a lone female going planning crazy for my upcoming trip to Spain in March (covering the major cities - Madrid, Barcelona, Cordoba, etc.) I have read that tourist offices keep updated lists of open hostel rooms and that deals can be found if you just book when you arrive.

As I mentioned however, I have been super planning and have already booked hostels for each city. (It may be important to mention that I prefer private single rooms averaging about 20-30 euro a night.)

My question is, I'm sure there are benefits to booking at the time of arrival but is this too risky? Is it cheaper? It's certainly more adventurous!

With hostels, you won't find things cheaper when you arrive....and, frankly, I wouldn't trust Spanish TI's to be completely up to date on what's available in hostels, and what's not. They will certainly direct you to certain places, but they won't necessarily know what vacancies are available (eg. dorms vs. private rooms).

Thanks everyone! I think I'll take extra preparation and precautions, this being my first trip overseas, and book in advance!

The better rated hostels will book up a lot faster than lower rated ones. When I travel (lone female as well) I like to know where I will be staying each night and my husband likes knowing too for peace of mind....there is nothing worse than arriving in a city and not finding a place to stay off the hop. I have been there once before and it is pretty stressful especially when you are alone.
