Hostelling

For those of you considering hostelling, but who have a picture in your mind of what it was like 30 years ago or more, read this interesting article in the New York Times.

Thank you for posting! I will share with my parents, as we are hoping to go with them next year. We only stayed at one hostel (in Heidelberg), but we found it clean and modern. The common areas were very nice and the breakfast was spectacular. My girls are begging to go back!

Yes, thanks for posting! I stayed in hostels 30 plus years ago and they could be terrific or really awful. The good ones I remember were in Heidelberg, Zurich, Grenoble, Tour and on Corfu. Paris was the absolute worst. I stayed out of desperation! Since then I stayed in one in Scotland about ten years ago that seemed like a moderate to good one from the old days. This is really interesting to hear about the changes. I may have to try this next time I travel. Pam

Great article, thank you. It's good to see more hostels offering smaller rooms, but with the environment of a hostel.

I don't mind staying in hostels but it's best when you're traveling alone or a couple of single people who are each paying their own way. A hostel for one is approximately 20 Euros, which is a good deal for one.

When you travel as a couple and want some privacy, hostels offer private rooms. The cost increases to about the same as a double room at a hotel. You can find a nicer place for the same price at another kind of lodging.

When traveling as a family you can rent a decent apartment for the same money as staying in hostel dormitories.
