If you're planning on hiking mostly on that side of the valley, you'd save some money on transportation costs.

The cheapest food will be to stop at the Coop stores (both Lauterbrunnen and Mürren as I recall) and buy a sandwich or whatever. Restaurants (and most other things) are expensive in Switzerland. Be sure to budget accordingly.
