Honeymoon Itinerary Help! Switzerland and Northern Italy

Hi! My wife and I have our honeymoon booked in early March. I’m beginning to second-guess our current itinerary and would love some feedback! We will fly into Zurich and fly out of Venice.

We have a total of 9 nights available, here is our current plan in order:

  • 2 nights in Zurich
  • 2 nights in Milan
  • 2 nights in Lugano
  • 3 nights in Venice

We have some great hotels booked, but all have flexible cancellation. We left the fanciest hotel for Venice, where we got a nice honeymoon suite. The flights are locked in and cannot be changed. We plan on traveling on train between cities, and taking the Italo from Milan to Venice.

My main concern is that I feel like we’re missing the most picturesque part of the alps. We would love to see the Matterhorn up close and enjoy the views. I’ve debating taking Milan completely out, but it seems we have to pass through it anyways to get to Venice. I also debated changing Lugano to Como or something else in that area. Would love to know your thoughts!

Some background info on us: We are a young couple from New York, we don’t have a massive budget but we do enjoy finding new restaurants, shops, traveling on trains, and enjoying views we don’t get back home. Our only trip together to Europe was 4 years ago to London and Munich.

Thank you!! ALL CHANGES AND IDEAS ARE WELCOME :))

Congratulations on your upcoming marriage. My suggestion would be to spend five nights at your preferred location in Switzerland (I’ll leave it to the Switzerland experts to help you choose that), and four nights in Venice. That would still allow you to do a day trip or two in Switzerland, and also to appreciate Venice properly.

Congratulations!
In March, much will depend on the weather. At this point in time, for the first 10 days of March clear weather is forecast for the Berner Oberland in the Alps just beyond Interlaaken. If you were arriving then, I would skip Zurich and immediately take a 2.5-hour train from Zurich’s airport to a mountain destination such as Murren, Wengen, Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald. Switzerland is all about its spectacular mountains— not its cities— and I think you are correct to feel you missed out if the only places you overnight at are two cities. After March 10, unfortunately, it looks as though the weather will get wet and snowy. That’s a time for a beautiful town such as Lucerne which is 2.5 train hours from the towns listed above.
Alternatively, with clear weather, I would suggest taking the 3.5-hr train east from Interlaaken to Chur, Switzerland where the UNESCO World Heritage train ride through San Moritz and south to Tirano, Italy begins. All trains on this route travel the same tracks as the famous “Bernina Express.” Since Interlaaken to St. Moritz is a 5.5 hr train ride, you could overnight in beautiful Pontresina, Switzerland just outside of St. Moritz to rest up for the highlight of the final section.
From Tirano. Venice can be reached in 5.5-7 hrs.

Have a great honeymoon!

I really doubt that a mountain forecast available now for early March is based on much beyond historical averages. It's really hard to predict mountain weather. That's why guide books urge visitors to check the webcams before coughing up big money for trips up high

For Switzerland you can do much better than Zurich. Consider Interlakken, it is wonderful.
Nothing wrong with Lugano, but for a honeymoon, pick two places.
I would spend 4 nights in Interlakken and perhaps one in Milan, then the rest in Venice.

Congratulations!!

I’d skip staying in Zurich. At least stay in Lucerne, if not to the Berner Oberland. Nothing comes close the majesty of the Berner Oberland. The Matterhorn can be hit or miss. You could go to Zermatt for days and never even see it.

I think your gut is correct - you would be missing the most beautiful part of Switzerland. I would follow the previous advice provided by kenko. Split your time between the BO area, with a stop along the Bernina Express route, then on to Venice.

I agree with the above. Zurich is a business city and it's not in the Alps. Hit the train as soon as you can toward B/O.

If your timing is right, change trains at Milan and take the train all the way to Venice.

It would have been better to fly into Milan Malpensa and take a 45 minute bus up to Lugano or a train up to Lake Como. Then it's an easy run back to Milan where you get on a fast train to Venice.
