Honeymoon in Spain and Greece

I would like to do a trip to Spain and Greece and planning my trip in October.
My fiancé only request was to go somewhere with a beach. I was planning to fly into Madrid from San Francisco. And that's as far as I have figured out. Should I also fly to Barcelona also or to Canary Islands? Is there other places I should consider?

Hi Betty. So, you are going to Madrid because you want to see Madrid? Have you looked at an international flight into Athens, I mean why start in Madrid, which of course has no beach?
If I was going for a "beach holiday" I would start in Greece and then fly on an inter europeon airline back to Barcelona or Madrid.. The weather on the Greek islands is lovely at the beginning of October but as October goes on it will start a bit to cool and places on the islands to close, so I would start there and then work backwards..

Canary Islands are far from Spain and Greece. If you want to go there then that may need to be your single destination. If you want beaches in Spain consider international flights from US to either Malaga or Barcelona. Research beach towns in those areas but remember that the temperatures will probably be too cool in October to swim in Spain. If water activities are a priority then you also need to check temperature averages for Greece and Canary Islands in October. As suggested before why not start in Greece and then head to Spain?

I think it might be a better idea to start in Greece too. Early October is still in season for the islands. As you get deeper into October, more things shut down and waters cool. But you could still have a great time. Spain has wonderful coastines and beaches. But Madrid is not close to them. You can easily get internation flights out of Barcelona or Malaga. Or spend the beach time in Greece and more traditional touristy things in Spain, like Madrid, Toledo, Sevilla and Granada. Or spend the time in Andalusia, which can include some beach time. As noted, the Canaries are quite off the beaten path from Europe's mainland.

Betty I have only been to Greece once and it was a long time ago, ( and I LOVED it) and we visited Mykonos and Paros.. with a few days in Athens. We did a week on each island and 3 days in Athens. When I do it again I would definately add Santorini and Naxos . I would likely not return to Mykonos for two reasons, one, I've done it, and two, its a rather party island and I am well past that now( I wasn't when I went and I had a great time there) it is however very beautiful all those white washed and blue shuttered buildings, the beaches were great , lots of cafes and restaurants and nightclubs etc. Athens,, well frankly I thought it was a big grubby city ,, yes the Parthenon is amazing and other historical sites, but er, the city itself did not charm my friend and I one bit( and this was during a 3 month trip to Europe where we had visited alot of cities, and we really thought Athens was a bit of a dumpo) but thats where you used to fly into to catch the ferries to the islands, nowaday with all the cheapo airlines you can fly straight to Santorini( if still in season) ..

Thanks for the info on Greece. What other countries do you recommend to hop over to if I am already in Spain?

I was just in Spain in mid Sept-early Oct. and the weather was excellent. The sea was swimmable, but cool. (The Aegean, however, is like stepping into a tepid bath tub.) We went to Nerja and Almunecar for great, uncrowded beaches in the Southwest of Spain. We got nice rooms with balconies overlooking the water for 60Euros. Then took the fast train back from Granada (nearby) to Madrid.

Betty I thought your idea of Spain and Greece were good already. Are you going early in October or later.. timing does count.
