honeymoon in italy, croatia, and greece

Hi all,

My fiancé and I are planning to have our honeymoon in Italy, Croatia, and Greece for 3 weeks in August or September of 2016. I'm hoping to get insight on what cities to visit and for how many days in each country. We really want to visit the Amalfi coast in Italy and Santorini in Greece. Any help would be truly appreciated. Thanks!!

While 3 countries in 3 weeks sounds reasonable, do look into the logistics of connecting those three countries. You'll quickly find that it will take most of a day to get between them, and will likely involve flying with connections each time. Yes, they're "next to each other," but doesn't mean they connect well on a single trip.

A good place to start with connections is Rome 2 Rio: http://www.rome2rio.com/. However, the prices shown are always for last minute purchase, so you can often beat them, and you always need to double-check anything it shows with the actual operator of the bus, train, plane, etc.

Choose either Croatia or Greece, not both; the only reasonable transport between them is to fly, usually with a connection. www.skyscanner.com is a good search engine for flights only. Either country has better flight schedules (and some ferries) from Italy.

I would push for mid Sept and later just for less hot weather in those locations. You best bet for starting is to visit your local library and check out guidebooks and travel DVDs so you get visual sense of what is available and - most important - what appeals to you. Then take a look at a map and put some pins in it to gain some perspective on distances and sequence of travel.

One way to see parts of these countries would be on a cruise. I went on a cruise with Royal Clippers that covered the Adriatic coast of Croatia, Montenegro and Slovenia in 7 days departing and arriving in Venice. They had longer cruises that had stops in Greece and maybe Turkey along with the previous countries. Royal Clippers is a sailing ship with around 200 passengers, but I would guess some of the larger cruise lines cover this area as well if that is more your style or budget.

Three weeks seems more than reasonable, thought the others are right: try settling on the transfers between the three countries first, so you can tell how much time you'll actually have to spend there and figure out how far from the airport you can get in that time span. And look into ferry transfers too, if you're up for a slower transition.

Like Laura I think a choice between Croatia and Greece would be best ...

Croatia Option
Fly into Venice (3 nts)
Train to Amalfi Coast (4 nts)
Train to Rome (4 nts)
Fly to Split (2 nt)
Croatia - Dalmatian Coast (7 nts) - cruise perhaps ? http://www.sail-croatia.com/croatia-cruises/elegance-cruises

Greece Option
Fly into Venice (3 nts)
Train to Amalfi Coast (4 nts)
Train to Rome (4 nts)
Fly to Santorini (6 nts) - or split the time with Mykonos ?
Ferry to Athens (3 nts)
