Hofbrauhaus in Munich

Is this place okay for dinner with middle school-aged kids?

Hi Debbie,
The Hofbrauhaus is a favorite turist site. We ate there in 2005 (about 9:00pm) and they had a brass band playing. It seemed like a festive atmosphere and not a barroom feeling. Lots of people there.
I remember seeing kids there also
Hope this helps
Dean

They will love it, and the food is quite good, too!!

The description given above accurately describes the beer hall section. There is also a separate restaurant section that is calm and civilized. I would feel comfortable taking a pre-schooler there.

We're taking 14 middle-schoolers there for dinner in June. We've been there before, and the atmosphere is fun and the food is good, too.

I went to Hofbrauhaus in Munich last month and saw a number of parents with young children in the beer hall (the kids were not drinking beer, to my knowledge). It's not unusual to see parents with children in beer gardens and beer taverns in Germany.

We had lunch there on March 26 and there were many
people with children. The band was playing.
My wife and I are not beer drinkers and at least at
lunch that seemed the norm. I wouldn't worry about
taking middle school kids there.

I agree with what the others have said about bringing kids, but I have seen someone throw-up before he or she could make it to the bathroom, so be prepared for that possiblity.

As far as the food, however, I, and the group I was traveling with, wasn't too impressed with the food.

But the place is a lot of fun, so that definitely makes up for it.

We were going to eat there when I was in high school with elementary school-aged brother and sister but it was just way too smoky, so we ended up eating upstairs. I know lots of European countries are going towards the no smoking in restaurants, but I haven't heard about Germany. If they've gone to this and/or you don't mind the smoke you should be fine. Upstairs is always a backup.

Hofbrauhaus is a non-smoking place now.

We went mid-day a couple of years ago and there was a group of quite possibly the most intoxicated teenagers I have ever seen celebrating their sixteenth birthday. They weren't obnoxious or anything, and we put it under the category of "local color". I'm taking 4 middle/high school students there in June with no hesitation.

Absolutely - I remember when we were there there were several youngsters dancing with their parents to the band and this was at like 9 or 10 PM
