hitch hiking

How's hitch hiking through Europe? Are there main freeways from country to country? Has anyone done it? I spent about 2 years hitch hiking throughout the US and had a blast. I know it's not 100% safe but I was curious if it's as common in Europe as it is in the U.S.

Yes, it is pretty popular amoung younger people and yes, we do have freeways as well (as we do have cars by the way - some say, ours were even a bit more advanced than the US ones). Caution: In many countries it's illegal to hitch hike on freeways. Try the big roads that lead to the freeway network instead. The last gas station before the freeway is usually best.

Of course there are freeways in Europe, even better than the ones in the USA.
I'd recommend to get an Atlas of Europe. It's pretty good, you will see how highways go and side roads as well.

I do not recommend hitchhiking. I did it once years ago outside of Oxford and I was lucky. The people who picked me up were both male and female college students like me. Harmless. There are a couple of reasons why it is illegal. Could 1 of them possibly be for safety of both driver and hitchhiker? Don't forget, Europe has its share of lunatics too.
