Hit the pavement: shoes

A frequent question what are the best all round shoes for long days on the pavement but at the same time don't scream out tourist. Do you buy on line?

zappos.com is a good online site for shoes. They ship free both ways (if you need to return). They also include comments from people who have tried the shoes, which I have found very helpful.

I like Merrell's slides or mary janes in a dark color. You can buy online or check Merrell's website for a retailer near you (DSW, REI and EMS all carry them, but other local stores do as well).

As soon as you pull out the guidebook or camera, you'll be pegged as a tourist - so go for whatever feels comfortable on your foot from the start. White sneakers scream tourist - if you can steer clear of them and find something equally comfortable, then pack those shoes.

Wear what you would wear in the States. Everyone will know you're a tourist and couldn't care less.

Hi Lee:

If you're buying a pair that you've never worn before, I would recommend buying them from a brick-and-mortar store so you can try them on first. Shoes are such a personal thing. Fit, comfort, the amount of support you need, not to mention sense of style, are different for everyone. What's comfortable for me may not work for you. (Plus, I don't know if you have specific foot issues, or if you're female or male or what style you prefer, so recommendations are difficult.)

Brands frequently mentioned include Dansko, Keen, Merrell, Ecco, Rockport, Clark's, Mephisto.

I personally prefer Dansko's Golden Gate line of shoes. For me, it has the right balance of support, cushioning and stability and works well with slightly more dressy outfits.

As another poster suggested, Zappos.com includes user reviews, so you can check out what others think of a certain shoe you're considering.

You might also check out the Graffiti Wall topic specifically dedicated to shoes.

ditto on the shop buying in person. Unless you have been getting the same one (and even then they may change)... go try them on. You can try to order a second color online - but returns are a hassle. Your foot may not fit well into what everyone else likes... so always try on. Pick a local reputable shop keep - and support their efforts and expertise with a purchase if they are reasonable. If you buy quality items chances are the people behind it feel the same way (like two of my local ecco and birk dealers!) Remember Happy feet = happy trip!

I always wear clogs and have walked all day around Paris, London, etc. in these with no problems. Take a well-broken in pair or 2!!! I cannot wear anything flat. My best investment (although pure luck comes into play here) was 2 pairs of Mephisto clog types
from Ebay for an unbelievably low price. I still live in these. Pure comfort. Whatever, you bring, please make sure they are broken-in and wear them all the time before you leave, just to be sure. I never wear sneakers!!!!!!!!Too hot and heavy for me.
