I am looking for a poster or fold out, something that shows the history of the world, art, civilization in visual form for my kids. We are going to see so much history and I want an easy tool to show them when each thing happened. Thanks!
Barb
Could you scan, enlarge and print the one from RS's 'Europe 101: History & Art for the Traveler'? It's quite good and the book should be on everyone's shelf, especially those of us who skipped out of our history classes in school!
try and contact National Geographic Society . They publish selected ones peiodically with their magazine. Although you would need to narrow it down to country or area
I would google it, or check Amazon / Borders websites.
The National Geographic ones are great. I've found some at used book stores before, although you have to rely on serendipity to find the right ones.
Barbara, How about having the kids help design and illustrate the timeline as you go? All you need is some posterboard and markers (and some kind if reference book to use as a guide for yourself to help them along).
I have a book that sounds like what you are describing: It's called "Timechart History of the World - (6000 years of World History Unfolded)". The book is large, about 12" by 18" and 1/2 thick. It's a pull out book - when completely unfolded, the page is fifteen ft wide, On the front of the page are multiple timelines of 6000 years of history, century by cenrury, decade by decade, covering all civilizations, all over the world. On the back side of the page, are more-in-depth timelines of all the Eurpean countries. As well as a complete overview of each civilization's history, they timeline art and inventions.
I purchased this book at Barnes and Nobles. I see it in stock there every so often, or it can be ordered. A lot of the info and maps and timecharts come from the library at the British Museum. I can give you the ISBN if this sounds like what you were looking for. This is one of my favourite reference books. And it was reasonable - about $20.
Barb, Just keep in mind the victors wrote history and most of it has a very distinct western european flavor. Instead try to find one that explains: - Why Italy started a renaissance but one was never needed in the east? - Why Columbus became the 3 or 4 individual to discover the Americas? - Why Pasta was not invented in Italy? - Who invented gunpower?
- etc. Edwin
