We will be leaving a train tour in Edinburg in May and would dearly love to spend time in Chipping Campden area of the Cotswolds.
Planes and trains eat up more time than we have. Any experience with hiring a driver we don't want to drive ourselves
Private hire vehicle from Edinburgh to Chipping Campden would cost well over £500 for this journey as a minimum at my guess. Would still take 6 hours if you are lucky with no stops. Probably more. Train and bus could be quicker.
The previous post has underestimated the fact that the driver, if you can find one, would have to stay overnight and drive back again. There are restrictions on how far commercial drivers can drive each day and this journey would put them out of hours, so this will limit how far they are prepared to drive.
I estimate that it would cost nearer £1,000. The train would be much easier. If you don't have time for this, you don't have time to drive it, with the likelihood that somewhere between Scotland and the Cotswolds, you will get stuck in traffic.
You don't say how long you wish to stay in Chipping Campden or where you will return to afterwards.
However, according to Google Maps, it's 340 miles and a minimum of 6 hours one way. Not exactly a one day round trip by car including a few hours in the Cotswalds.
That would be like driving from where you are to Spokane.....and then a little more.
What you could do is take a an early morning train from Edinburgh to Birmingham and get a driver from there. The train is about 4.5 hours and the drive to Chipping Campden about an hour. You could spend the afternoon in The Cotswalds and catch an evening train back to Edinburgh. (And get a knowledgable driver who knows the area.)
A long day but the only way to do it with a driver without staying overnight.
Stephanie,
I agree with the others that using a private car service from Edinburgh to the Cotswolds is going to be prohibitively expense. Of course, if you have a millionaire friend paying the bills, a Helicopter transfer would be easier and faster. I'd like to comment on one point mentioned by Marco, in terms of the driving time. I've found that driving in the U.K. ALWAYS takes longer than even the best made plans and Google estimates, for a variety of reasons.
For example, a few years ago I made a road trip from Manchester to Winchester. The distance is about 210 miles and the planning calculators indicated the drive would take about 4 hours - WRONG! It was a lot longer than that, and I was only stopping for fuel and food. As someone else mentioned, you'll likely have to pay an overnight stop for the driver as well, due to the commercial regulations.
Could you clarify if you're returning to Edinburgh after visiting the Cotswolds, or going elsewhere? Also, how long do you have for the visit to the Cotswolds (number of nights)?
