I asked 2 different TSA people at the Denver airport today if hiking poles can go in carry on and they both said YES. if the poles are collapsible, or come apart, they can go into your carry on luggage...the tip on most of this type of pole is convex, no point, so it's fine. Ski poles are not allowed.
I asked the 2 TSA officers at different times, and at different locations to see if I got different answers...they both said the same thing, without hesitation.
And...while I was on the concourse, I noticed at least one person walking with a hiking pole.
