Hiking in Germany

Looking for something around Frankfurt. We arrive early in the morning and wanted to get out and hike to help with jet lag. Any suggestions?

Do you want to do urban hiking or rural hiking? Will you be staying in Frankfurt that night or heading out of town?

I'm aware that Frankfurt is very urban, I was just thinking there may be something a short (1-2hrs) train ride away. We will be staying only one night Frankfurt.

Gina, one tip for you. Don't wear sunglasses. Your body gets cues from sunlight about the time of day, and if you block UV from your eyes the adjustment doesn't happen. Do a google search and you can find more about this.

Frankfurt is surrounded by forested hills and mountains. So without a lot of hassle and journey time you can hike thru forrests or to small but picturesque towns with medieval sights. From downtown Frankfurt (e.g. Hauptwache station) take U3 to it's final destination Oberursel Hohemark. You're then in the middle of the mountains and can either hike up Mt. Feldberg or walk to Kornberg, a small town with medieval downtown and downtown castle. From there take S4 train back to Frankfurt. Train rides are around 30-45 mins and the RMV day ticket or group day ticket is good for it.

Alternatively take S5 or U2 to Bad Homburg where you could either walk thru their big Kur gardens which are adjacent to the forested hills. You could either hike all the way to the ancient Roman border patrol castle "Saalburg" from where busses take you back to Bad Homburg. Bad Homburg also has got a nice castle to visit. http://www.badhomburg.de/sc/Tourism_Leisure/819146.asp

Andreas,
Thank you so much for your wonderful suggestions. Our trip is not until September, will we have to worry about the weather that time of year?
Thanks so much!

September and even October are usually the nicest months of the year in Germany. It's birght and sunny but not as muggy as it is during June, July and August. I'm melting in an un-climatized office in downtown Frankfurt as I'm typing this...

Andreas,
Thank you so much. I still have four months but I can't wait. I've been reading many other forum topics and have seen many of your responses. We're very lucky to have a local who is so helpful.
Thanks again
