Help with itinerary for 3-4 weeks around Christms

My husband and I arrive in Paris and have 3 or 4 weeks to drive anywhere we want. We can depart from Paris or any other city to come home. We'd like some adventure, but adventure with direction. He's a painter so art museums are high on our wish list, but small out of the way ones are sometimes more interesting.

We like the idea of not too many tourists and plan to stop when we get tired and stay a few days or more anywhere we particularly like - but does anyone have an idea of the perfect European road trip for Christmas.

ps Last Christmas we rented a gite in Northern Brittany as a base and just saw sites via day trips. We want to be a bit more adventurous this year.

Thank you in advance!

Susan: I'm trying to think of a good driving tour for you. I have a question for you: Have you been to Paris before, other than just flying in and out?

My husband and I had very positive exp driving in France and Germany. And ther is something very Christmas about Bavaria....so I suggest 3 days in each of the following:
Paris -
Amboise -(Chateaus)
Arles - (wine tour)
Nice - (probably too cold for a beach but still worth it)
*Drive to Germany, we didn't cut across this way so I am not sure how far it is but I think it is doable.

Baden-Baden (Adventure of the naked kind, totally worth it)
Rhine Valley -castles
Nurmberg/rothenburg: Very xmas!
Munich: top it off in a beer hall
Have a blast!!

You may consider Dijon capital of Burgundy which is perfect if you also like history and architecture. It is so underrated, you will never find too many
tourists especially in winter. It is also the ideal base to discover Burgundy.

The fine Arts museum "Musée des Beaux Arts" which was founded in 1787 and is one of the oldest in France is housed in the Ducal Palace "Palais des Ducs".This museum contains the finest collection of paintings and sculptures outside of Paris.

If you also like small museums, you will love Magnin museum which is a private one located in one of the nicest private mansions of Dijon (17th century). http://www.musee-magnin.fr

One of the best things to do is to follow the Owl's trail. You'll find the brochure at the tourist offices (2.5€) and it will lead you to all the nicest sites of Dijon at your own pace.

Since you like gites, you might consider staying at http://www.myhomeindijon.com (terrific location, right between the Fine Arts Museum and Magnin museum!) a lovely apartment which gets rave reviews on other travel boards.

A Christmas market takes place every year on the main square in front of the Ducal Palace.

Beaune is only 45km South of Dijon, ideal for a day trip, do not miss the Hospices near the tourist office.

Bon voyage!

I'd like to add to Coco's reasons for considering Burgundy: Epoisses cheese!
